Indeed ... Sarah Palin has been remarkably consistent in her inability to understand basic legislation and policy.

I remember the interview with Charles Gibson when it turned out she didn't even understand the "Bush Doctrine" ... which my young son was aware of.
But of course, Sarah ... being Sarah ... went on a media blitz ... complaining that MAINSTREAM MEDIA IS OUT TO GET ME.
Being 'not very bright' ... Sarah doesn't seem to understand that these "Living Will' Counseling sessions are fairly common in more Progressive States and Efficient Hospitals - they help seniors deal with very serious financial and personal decisions ... so that they are in a position of control ...
But of course ... Sarah ... and Wolfie ... can't understand this concept ... they can't imagine helping their fellow citizens ...
The Modern Republican would rather defeat EVERY Obama proposal ... even if it meant hurting other Americans.
But then , , , that's been the "Standard Operating Procedure" of the typical Republican for near to 35 years now.

My question is ...what is wrong with having a program that assists a person that is in their final years. Planning is important for the individual and for those that are left behind.

Is this consulting now part of palliative care?
The key to effective palliative care is to provide a safe way for the individual to address their physical and psychological distress, that is to say their total suffering, a concept first thought up by Dame Cicely Saunders, and now widely used, for instance by authors like Twycross or Woodruff.[11] Dealing with total suffering involves a broad range of concerns, starting with treating physical symptoms such as pain, nausea and breathlessness. The palliative care teams have become very skillful in prescribing drugs for physical symptoms, and have been instrumental in showing how drugs such as morphine can be used safely while maintaining a patient's full faculties and function. However, when a patient exhibits a physiological symptom, there are often psychological, social, or spiritual symptoms as well. The interdisciplinary team, which often includes a social worker or a counselor and a chaplain, can play a role in helping the patient and family cope globally with these symptoms, rather than depending on the medical/pharmacological interventions alone. Usually, a palliative care patient's concerns are pain, fears about the future, loss of independence, worries about their family, and feeling like a burden. While some patients will want to discuss psychological or spiritual concerns and some will not, it is fundamentally important to assess each individual and their partners and families need for this type of support. Denying an individual and their support system an opportunity to explore psychological or spiritual concerns is just as harmful as forcing them to deal with issues they either don't have or choose not to deal with."

There isn't anything wrong with consultation to assist anyone. The fear - unjustified - is that the government will FORCE the issues rather than leaving the final decision up to the patient. Currently there is no language in the bills that forces anyone to do anything as far as I can tell.

As I mention above ... this section of the Health Care Insurance Reform bill was inspired by the successful programs in other hospitals.

It's an idea that empowers seniors.
And here's the key .... Modern Republicans view ANY government attempt to empower seniors as evil.
Modern Republicanism places very high value on keeping seniors frightened ... that's how they control them ... and that's how they swing their votes.

I hate to cut and paste but Palin clearly had a ghostwriter (even LOL on Facebook), either that or she doesn't speak in the same language she writes, so since this is so well said:

"Right now, the charge that’s gaining the most traction is the claim that health care reform will create “death panels” (in Sarah Palin’s words) that will shuffle the elderly and others off to an early grave. It’s a complete fabrication, of course. The provision requiring that Medicare pay for voluntary end-of-life counseling was introduced by Senator Johnny Isakson, Republican — yes, Republican — of Georgia, who says that it’s “nuts” to claim that it has anything to do with euthanasia.
And not long ago, some of the most enthusiastic peddlers of the euthanasia smear, including Newt Gingrich, the former speaker of the House, and Mrs. Palin herself, were all for “advance directives” for medical care in the event that you are incapacitated or comatose. That’s exactly what was being proposed — and has now, in the face of all the hysteria, been dropped from the bill." Paul Krugman - NYT
Nevermind that euthanasia is ILLEGAL! It cannot be performed in the United States.
But Idiot America is winning this debate. I had a poster tell me they want a bill written in plain easy to read language. Have they read their private insurance policy? Have they ever read a government bill? Republican or Democratic? They act as if this bill is unique. Some form of conspiratorial trickery.
And as Krugman points out, Sarah Palin is accusing her fellow Republican Isakson of the same as she accuses Democrats. Nevermind that she supported similar legislation herself. The absurdity of it all! What does this bode for our future?-

Palin once supported advanced directives (living wills) and even proclaimed a health care day in Alaska promoting living wills. Now for the convenience of party politics she has reversed her stand and is now against them and accuse our government in wanting to euthanize it's citizens. She has become a prostitute for the insurance and medical industry and is against the best interests of American citizens.
