Elsewhere on Propeller, there's a story in which SonOfTheMask concludes that the American People simply want to slow down on Health Care Reform. ... This is a ruse ... At the close of World War II, President Harry Truman proposed a new national health care program. The president witnessed Great Britain's support of its universal health care while broke and rebuilding from the war's rubble. Truman said, "The health of the American children, like their education, should be recognized as a definite public responsibility."

For SIXTY YEARS ... narrow minded people have opposed a solution to an obvious problem ... how many more years must we let these drones control us?

The American People ... God Love em ... unfortunately have very short attention spans ... and very short memories.

They forget that we've recognized the Health Care problem for many decades ... but have allowed the narrow minded drones to drown out all talk ... just like what's happening now.

How long will we let these drones stop us?

    FTA ...

President Harry Truman proposed a new national health care program. The president witnessed Great Britain's support of it's universal health care ...(which they succeeded in accomplishing while rebuilding from the war's rubble and economically broke).

Truman is quoted ... "The health of the American children, like their education, should be recognized as a definite public responsibility.

[Of course ... this bespeaks a sense of morality ... ethics ... both of which has been bred OUT of the Modern Christian Conservative.]

The American Medial Association attacked the bill, characterizing it as 'socialized medicine' ... (sound familiar?) ...

These attacks gained traction at a time of heightening anti-communist fervor ... AND FEAR.

At the start of the Korean War ... the president had to abandon his health care effort.

What does it take for Americans and their elected representatives to get past the socialized medicine scare talk and come to grips with reality?

When I look at problems like health care I try and look long term into the future when looking for the solution. I have stated that I do not believe your country can afford a really good program at this time because of the economic problems it is facing, in the last week or so I sort of decided that this idea is short term thinking.
In the heading of this story, Truman witnessed Great Britian using a long term thinking process. Whenever major ideas like this are made one has to look at what may happen if one goes ahead with the idea or also what may happen if one maintains the status quo. My understanding of the American health care situation has improved somewhat in the last little while and I still think that you do have a system that is good or maybe great, the fault is that this only applies to those who can afford it. As health care cost increase, and they will continue to do so, the number of people who can afford it will decline, which will eventually lead to a real social issue. So the problem comes down to, does one go ahead and address the issue of ever increasing uninsured, which will have a major cost, or does one wait until a very dangeous situation arises between those who can afford health care and those who can't.
President Truman witnessed the solution, why can't you.

Remember united we stand, divided we fall.

Just a few facts in case anyone cares.

        FTA

"The dangers of inefficient health care delivery were recognized by Harry Truman in 1945. His aim of a national health plan assuring that all Americans could be assured of paid health care expenses is more critical now than ever. In 1945, 15 million were uninsured."

Knowing that the population in 1945 was about 139,928,165 then if 15 million were uninsured that would be somewhere around 10.7 percent. Now if you take the current population of 307,185,322 and you subtract the 20 million illegal aliens from the currently (from the article "In 1993, 37 million Americans were uninsured; currently the numbers are approaching 50 million.") 50 million uninsured the you come up with a number somewhere around 30 million. This represents about 9.8 percent.

        So where is the crisis?

        Also from an earlier post....

        "FTA ...

[Of course ... this bespeaks a sense of morality ... ethics ... both of which has been bred OUT of the Modern Christian Conservative.]"

What does the "SCHIP" program do?

        It insures children.

And as far as "bespeaking a sense or morality", why is it that the biggest burden of the cost of this program has been thrust upon a socially cast out group, the smokers?

Are they responsible for all our children's ills? Are they the only Americans WITH children? Are they the rich and elite class who can afford this?

No, they are a minority who bears the brunt of absolutely no support because of nothing more than exercising a legal activity that goes against a prevailing faction.

        Alexander Hamilton wrote:

        Federalist Paper No. 78. [p315]"

"Those who wrote our Constitution well knew the danger inherent in special legislative acts which take away the life, liberty, or property of particular named persons because the legislature thinks them guilty of conduct which deserves punishment."

He may be right about the "FEAR" factor but which side it comes, that is clearly debatable.

        In God We Trust

It is all a puzzle to me. Why do the people who can afford private insurance want to prevent those who cannot from having a federal system. No shouting about "Socialised medicine" since those who shout thus have never experienced its benefits. Come to the UK, live here and realise it is better than having to constantly worry about health. The opposite of socialism is fascism, is that how you would describe the current US system? Don't forget that Eisenhower warned the US about the Military/Industrial Complex which is certainly in existence now.

Also from the article ... ... after Truman tried to push through some Health Care Plan ... LBJ tried his hand ... and had a bit more follow through than Truman.

Even so ... " ... American Medical Association was firmly against the Medicare program. Then AMA President Dr. Edward Annis broke down in tears on national television railing against Medicare. That was the same Edward Annis who argued that smoking warning labels were unnecessary."

The same guy who was opposed to warning labels ... broke down in tears ... Glenn Beck style ... at the passage of Medicare.

See? The Right in America have a long standing association with Moral Relativism.

          Also from the article ... ... Nixon's efforts ... ...

After LBJ ... "President Richard M. Nixon picked up the banner for health care reform claiming, "Let us act now to assure all Americans financial access to high quality health care." He further argued, "For the average American family, it is clear that without adequate insurance, even normal care can be a financial burden while catastrophic illness can mean catastrophic debt." The year was 1974.

Among elements of his plan were employer mandates and HMOs. Hawaii adopted the Nixon model and became the first and only state to accomplish universal health coverage. Congress quickly moved to thwart such employer mandates outside of Hawaii. Nixon's national plan never materialized, derailed by the Watergate scandals and his resignation.

I think it's important to note that it was a DEMOCRATIC Congress who thwarted Nixon's efforts at reform. I don't know what their reasons were ... but I think I can make ONE point about that ... Political Parties DO change with the times.

The Republican Party used to be staid, cautious, conservative, ... now ... they are loud, crass, and wasteful ... oh ... and preposterously self righteous.

            Also from the article ... ... Clinton's efforts ... ...

"The Clinton health care proposal, 1,000 pages long, required every U.S. citizen and permanent resident alien to be enrolled in a qualified health plan. In 1993, 37 million Americans were uninsured; currently the numbers are approaching 50 million. Again, complex forces including many medical associations, conservative policy groups and concentrated media blitzes, undermined the effort. Among the more interesting arguments were those suggesting that no health care crisis existed.

The current picture of a dysfunctional health care system leaves tens of millions uninsured, millions more underinsured, and many insured unhappy. It was further suggested that as many as 1 in 3 Americans under the age of 65 were uninsured for as long as six months during 2007. That could push the numbers as high as 87.5 million.

I've read that ... as expensive as the Clinton plan was ... as a nation ... we've ALREADY spent MORE on the UN-INSURED than the Clinton plan would have cost since 1993.

Sometimes ... Doing NOTHING ... is MORE Expensive than doing SOMETHING.
