I don't know how many of you are familiar with Philip K Dick and his story, Second Variety. It was eventually made into a movie called Screamers. The robot in this story has me seriously wondering if Dick was a prophet.

They say it will only seek vegetable matter to sustain itself, but I'm left wondering what its method is of determining the difference between vegetable matter and animal (human) matter? Even if the coding is fool proof, I wonder also, how easy would it be for a hacker to change it?

Here's a short trailer from the movie screamers. Note that they have the movie taking place on a planet of another star. In Dick's story, the action takes place on Earth. The movie has an optomistic ending, but Dick's novelette Has the machines winning.

This robot is now in the realm of science non-fiction.
