It was back in 1989 that the newly elected reformist government of Budapest took the first step towards the fall of the Iron Curtain, the tearing down of the Berlin wall, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War after four-and-a-half decades spent at the edge of a Third World War.
