Ailing Kennedy Asks for Speedy Replacement Process »

A cancer-stricken Sen. Edward M. Kennedy has asked Massachusetts leaders to change state law to allow a speedy replacement of him in the Senate, fearing a months-long open seat will deny Democrats a crucial vote on President Barack Obama's health care overhaul. In a note to Gov. Deval Patrick and other state leaders, Kennedy wrote "it is vital for this commonwealth to have two voices speaking for the needs of its citizens and two votes in the Senate during the approximately five months between a vacancy and an election."Health care has been Kennedy's signature issue. Although Democrats hold a potentially filibuster-proof margin in the Senate, the fate of a sweeping health care bill could hinge on a single vote and some moderate Democrats have been wavering. Another Democrat, Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia, has been seriously ill and often absent. In his succession letter, Kennedy suggests the governor ensure the fairness of any appointment to replace him by seeking an "explicit personal commitment" his appointee will not seek the position on a permanent basis.
Patrick said in a statement: "It's typical of Ted Kennedy to be thinking ahead and about the people of Massachusetts, when the rest of us are thinking about him." Besides Joseph Kennedy and Coakley, Democrats who might try to succeed Kennedy include Reps. Stephen Lynch, Michael Capuano, Edward Markey, James McGovern and William Delahunt.

Ted Kennedy is such a brave and patriotic man.
He has put the healthcare reform bill before his own health.

Obama has been trying to be civil about this healthcare bill. But there are some that want to call names and not work togather.
So if Obama says we go it alone than maby that is the way it will have to be to get this thing done.

The only reason why the law was changed in 2004 was to keep a Republican Gov.(Mit Romney)from appointing Kerry's replacement if he won the 04 election. Here we go again. Democrats wanting to change the law to fit there needs. What a surprise!!

The American people have wanted the State of Massachusetts to speed up this change for decades.

Bye, Ted. Good riddance. Your sister left a greater legacy (Special Olympics) than you ever dreamed of leaving.

Yet another Kennedy that believes his seat is more important then the laws and regulations of Massachusetts. Nothing matters but what is best for him and his Party, damn the people of Massachusetts. They may choose another approach then the one he has set for them.

WOW -- the Chappaquitick Kingpin does it again -- whatever it takes. It isn't enough he lets a young lady die in the water, votes for a law that disallows Mitt Romney to immediately name a predecessor to an outgoing representative, and now petitions the current MA Governor to REPEAL the law he voted for because it doesn't suit his Democratic Party any more. What a jerk!

You know, it's all about choices isn't it? Ted Kennedy made a CHOICE to leave that young lady in the water. He made a CHOICE to vote the "new" law re replacing a representative. Now he's making a CHOICE to ask for the law to be repealed. Sorry, but NO GOOD DEED erases the CHOICES HE ALONE HAS MADE.
The CHOICES we make dictate the life/legacy we lead.

If these polititions are truly servents of the people why do they never step down when they no longer can actually serve the people? This is nothing new many have died before they would concede their position of status.

Kennedy is the one which pushed for this law to be put in place to begin with. Now he doesn't like it any more when it doesn't fit his current needs??

            Leave it as is!!

I don't understand the problem,am I to believe that the people's republic of Mass.would elect a republican to replace Teddy. This would reduce the state to common status.I hope this doesn't happen, let us proceed like he was a mere mortal like us,nothing more nothing less.
