Ailing Kennedy Asks for Speedy Replacement Process »
Posted By Newperson 4 months, 1 week ago in Political NewsA cancer-stricken Sen. Edward M. Kennedy has asked Massachusetts leaders to change state law to allow a speedy replacement of him in the Senate, fearing a months-long open seat will deny Democrats a crucial vote on President Barack Obama's health care overhaul. In a note to Gov. Deval Patrick and other state leaders, Kennedy wrote "it is vital for this commonwealth to have two voices speaking for the needs of its citizens and two votes in the Senate during the approximately five months between a vacancy and an election."Health care has been Kennedy's signature issue. Although Democrats hold a potentially filibuster-proof margin in the Senate, the fate of a sweeping health care bill could hinge on a single vote and some moderate Democrats have been wavering. Another Democrat, Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia, has been seriously ill and often absent. In his succession letter, Kennedy suggests the governor ensure the fairness of any appointment to replace him by seeking an "explicit personal commitment" his appointee will not seek the position on a permanent basis.
Patrick said in a statement: "It's typical of Ted Kennedy to be thinking ahead and about the people of Massachusetts, when the rest of us are thinking about him." Besides Joseph Kennedy and Coakley, Democrats who might try to succeed Kennedy include Reps. Stephen Lynch, Michael Capuano, Edward Markey, James McGovern and William Delahunt.

Which health care are you talking about? He's been trotting out the same socialist plan for the last 40 years. In the 70's he was slapped around by a Canadian doctor who openly called Kennedy's plan a lie. He tried in the 80;s and Clinton in the 90's. Haven't you figured out how Obama got Kennedy's support in the election? Kennedy wants a legacy. He knows he's dying, there are no cures when you're at Stage IV. Being compared to JFK was a huge gift. Obama has nothing in common with JFK besides being young. Kennedy loved his country. He fought for his country. He stood up to the Soviets and any other nation he felt was a threat. Obama, well lets just say he feels more comfortable with liberal Europeans, I really don't know if he likes much less loves America. He's never fought for America but he's got a lot of friends who support defeating America. He stands up to no one and apologias to anyone willing to let him read to them. So with this in mind, what would cause Kennedy to give Obama the blessing? How about the national health care plan he's been pitching forever. We now know the price paid by Teddy. Amazing what some murderers will do for a good legacy....

What GOP problems? You control the House, Senate and White House. You don't need us at all and from the "open" meetings here in Milwaukee, you don't invite us either. If you can't force this terrible plan through on your own, don't blame us. Blame your crappy leadership. Premier Obama, Queen Nancy and your Court Jester, Harry Reid. But don't blame us.

Civil? Obama's people started the race card playing as soon as someone asked what bike paths were doing in a health bill. The 1015 page House version. I've read it. Printed it off myself. Lots of fluff but clearly no real stuff. Lots of room for cut backs and restrictions along with reductions in coverage. It's very much like the UK or Canadian plan. If it passes, don't get sick.

The only reason why the law was changed in 2004 was to keep a Republican Gov.(Mit Romney)from appointing Kerry's replacement if he won the 04 election. Here we go again. Democrats wanting to change the law to fit there needs. What a surprise!!

Teddy is guilty of murder, covering up a rape and God only knows what else. He's not someone that should be looked upon as a hero. He's someone we should look at with contempt. He should have been send to jail for a very long, long time. I'm tired of his hiding behind the JFK/RFK mantra. Teddy is a scum bag and never should have been permitted to walk the streets a free man.

Probably could have been delivered a little better, but for the most part true. Poor Sen. Kennedy will always be remembered for his "little car accident" and not for any of the good things he has actually done, such as mentoring children in inner city schools in DC, working for education reform, etc....so sad that his good deeds won't be remembered, but his indiscretions will be.

Yet another Kennedy that believes his seat is more important then the laws and regulations of Massachusetts. Nothing matters but what is best for him and his Party, damn the people of Massachusetts. They may choose another approach then the one he has set for them.

WOW -- the Chappaquitick Kingpin does it again -- whatever it takes. It isn't enough he lets a young lady die in the water, votes for a law that disallows Mitt Romney to immediately name a predecessor to an outgoing representative, and now petitions the current MA Governor to REPEAL the law he voted for because it doesn't suit his Democratic Party any more. What a jerk!

You know, it's all about choices isn't it? Ted Kennedy made a CHOICE to leave that young lady in the water. He made a CHOICE to vote the "new" law re replacing a representative. Now he's making a CHOICE to ask for the law to be repealed. Sorry, but NO GOOD DEED erases the CHOICES HE ALONE HAS MADE.

I don't understand the problem,am I to believe that the people's republic of Mass.would elect a republican to replace Teddy. This would reduce the state to common status.I hope this doesn't happen, let us proceed like he was a mere mortal like us,nothing more nothing less.
