well, as krugman also points ou, several european countries do it that way. it could be through individual mandates, with caps and strictures on the way insurance xompanies write their policies and determine what they will pay for.

The presidents supporters are never going to get everything they wanted. So can we have healthcare reform without public option? That is a big one to get past. I do not think we should let this be the end of healthcare reform. I have pulled for healthcare reform from the start.

Americans need this and there just has got to be a way to work through this.
There is alot at stake here. We have never made it this far. And one thing is a fact what we have now is not working.-

Krugman is spot on with what I have thought for a couple of months now - Obama needs to quit being a nice guy. Americans like toughness in a leader, and he is not showing any in this battle. Just like any of us trying to be friendly with people who have no interest in returning the friendship, one learns and moves on and ignores those folks.
Reply
Obama needs to do the same with the Reps. The Reps have no interest in passing any health care reform at all unless it is written by the Insurance industry for the benefit of same.
Just follow the money because that is the only issue.

I agree with Krugman's opinion that many on the left feel betrayed by Obama.

The troops aren't home.
Gitmo isn't closed.
Rendition is still in use.
Allowing Xe (blackwater) to remain in Iraq and also Afghanistan and Pakistan.
I'm not a spoiled child - I know I can't get everything I want but these are priorities to me and he has followed many of previous administration's policies almost to the 'T'. It's disheartening.
Public option?? I just don't know. Plenty of lies surround this whole issue and it's difficult, without knowing what's in the complete bill, to make any real judgment about any of it.
What I do know for sure is that every person on the planet needs healthcare. When I hear 'purchase', I cringe.
"The idea of letting individuals buy insurance from a government-run plan"
This will still leave thousands - if not millions unable to afford policies.-

FTA - "So progressives are now in revolt. Mr. Obama took their trust for granted, and in the process lost it. And now he needs to win it back."
Yes, he needs to win it back! And, it's about all of the things you stated and more. Obama needs to see that progressives and many others have drawn a line in the sand and want to see some backbone! -

my real beef with the obama administrations is addressed by krugman in his op-ed, namely, the kid glove approach they've taken with the banks. it's biz as usual on wall street, except that because of moves made llate n the bush administration and early in the obama administration, whatever competition that existed on wall street has led to further concentration and consolidation of capital and market management.
boo hiss.

Since 1948 the citizens of the UK have had no fear of not being able to pay Medical Bills. Even the Tory leader David Cameron is quite clear that the NHS is one of the untouchables in UK politics. I cannot understand the US when I see citizens who cannot afford Medical Bills speaking against universal healthcare. Don't tell me you can't afford it, of course you can you are the richest country on the planet

Unfortunately, we also have one of the best propaganda machines money can buy. This corporate monster spreads its lies and deceit on advertised TV without a consequence or rebuttal.
This type of brainwashing has gone on for so long the brainwashed just merely accept these lies as truth. It is very sad.
The flip side of this is also sad. The corporations, and their supporters, whom spread these lies are the loudest voices refuting the truth whenever it does get recognition.

Obama is doing pretty much what I expected. Anyone who thought that the troops where going to come straight home isn't looking at the facts. We can't just up and leave. Bush left too big of a mess to be able to clean everything up in 6 months. I think the President is doing as good a job as he can. We have already seen improvement in world opinion, The President is dealing with Gitmo as best as he can, we must stabilize Afghanistan (finish the job that Bush left undone while marching off to Iraq) and already we have seen improvements in the economy. What more do you want from this President?

Government Health Care doesn't work and our present system with competition done the right way, without the inclusion of Illegal Aliens is the only way to have a successful Health Care Solution.

i don't know what you know about the development of market sectors, but the truth is that what starts out as competition ends up with market consolidatiob. i can't think of an industry in the us that hsn't been turned upside down, ever since the airlines were deregulated.
i'll ignore the rest of your post, as it would be preferable to have a conversation with a dining room table, as it's far more substantial.

Our health insurance system does not need to be fixed!
Reply
It does what it is intended to do, that is, generate huge profits and keep employees in thrall to their employers. It doesn't do a good job of making sure sick people get appropriate medical care, but that's a side issue, this is about big business.
When a system is performing as it was designed to perform, it cannot be fixed, as there is nothing broken. If you don't like the outputs of that system, it is time to design a system that does perform as you would like it to perform.
This is the central fallacy of the ObamaBaucus reform circus. Private insurance is the problem, and it is the problem precisely BECAUSE it functions as it was designed to function. Proposing to fix the problem while retaining the very system which IS the problem is imbecility on a grand scale.
