It's funny how the article mentions how Murdoch doesn't touch a computer in his everyday life, because this idea can only come from someone unfamiliar with how the internet works. I don't see any realistic way to charge folks for the news online, if one site charges, go to another one. If all news sites get together and start charging, regular folks will fill in instead, like they did during the last Iran elections. I kept up to date on that story not from news organizations, but from sites like Twitter and Propeller.

Well, Mr. Murdoch, if you think you can sell the idea of people not only having to tolerate your biased version of 'news', but actually pony up money for it, be my guest. I think I'll stick with the BBC where actual investigative journalism is still alive.

What could be an interesting place to find an online revenue stream is to charge people to leave comments.

Instantly, spammers would be scared off your site. And most of the trolls with nothing real to add would also take the hint.
A nickle-per-comment fee (or some such) could have the potential to raise large amounts of revenue and actually filter out some of the crap that is posted.
It's an interesting thought.
