CIA Director Leon Panetta has just sent this letter to the CIA in advance of today’s anticipated release of the 2004 CIA inspector general report on torture — and, quite possibly, an investigation from Attorney General Eric Holder into the same. The last time he sent one of these, it was to buck up agency morale after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi accused the agency of misleading congress on torture.

Leon Panetta sounds like he is nearly fed up with his fellow Democrats and their insistence on politicizing the CIA in order to cause a distraction on the serious policy issues they're having.

Panetta and Obama might want to throw a rug over this whole issue, but it doesn't seem to be going away.

Progressive has a nice submit this morning about panetta in a shouting match at the white house. I'd say he a little stressed.

"The CIA has a strong record in terms of following legal guidance and informing the Department of Justice of potentially illegal conduct."

Uh-huh, Operation Mockingbird, Project RESISTANCE, Project MERRIMAC, Operation CHAOS, Project MKULTRA, etc show just how strong CIA record of following the rule of law is.

I imagine if we're lucky 50 years from now CIA will declassify another set of "Family Jewels" reports detailing the illegal activity they've been carrying out in the past 10 years and we'll finally get an acknowledgment of how widespread the use of torture actually was.

Panetta might as well have said, that CIA didn't do anything wrong and was just following orders. The argument is bound to be convincing to someone, just like the good old "It's not against the law if President does it".
