High on Hornácko »
Posted By gamahuche 4 months ago in Arts & EntertainmentThe annual Hornácké slavnosti (Hornácko celebrations) that take place in the village of Velká nad Velickou are like a small but prized gem among Moravia's folklore festivals. While larger events such as the ones that take place in nearby Strážnice feature multiple stages and performers from other countries, Hornácké slavnosti are an intimate affair, with only one stage and featuring solely local performers. Landscape plays a dominant role in this small region: Hornácko translates as something akin to highlands, and the festival takes place on the hillside of Strážná hurka (Sentinel hill), with a beautiful view over the surrounding landscape.
This tiny region contains only 10 villages as officially defined by ethnographers. The culture of Hornácko is considered to be among the purest and most well-preserved in the Czech Republic, perhaps a result of the hilly area's relative isolation in the past. Tradition is strong here – not just as a nostalgic museum piece pulled out and dusted off once a year, but as an everyday part of people's lives

This is one of the best aspects for me of the Czech Republic - and that the womenfolk are, for the most part, as gorgeous as the guys in the picture are homely..

There are so many traditions that are proudly preserved that I could write a book about it and probably will! -

The location is in Southern Moravia, just W of the White Carpathian Mountains, just N of the Slovak border and not far E from Austria. The closest town of any size is Hodonin.

So far its an area that has even escaped my questing - but not for long!
I'll try to post some music from there a little later. -

In a way this reminds me of some of the Folk areas of the United States, much like the Appalachian and Ozark areas to name two hilly off the beaten track regions.
And in a more localized areas where mostly ethnic populations are concentrated. When my wife and I were young we really enjoyed the Polish um-pah music. She played the accordion, piano, organ, and guitar as well as being a good singer.
At some of the festivals we would get lost in the Polkas and the reverie. Some of the best was up in Big Bear in California or Octoberfest in Hot Springs, Arkansas, both hilly areas where good people gathered.
You are so correct in the fact that where the young gather to celebrate the tradition - it lives thru the generations. That is something that seems to slipping away as I get older, whether it is because of my age or the changes of our world, I am not sure, nevertheless it is occurring.
Seems everytime I read or hear of the Balkan regions I am reminded of the story of a village in the Slovak area that when the Nazis were looking for some downed Allied pilots, those Slovaks resisted the measured shooting of their village people refusing to reveal where those allied pilots were. That sacrifice was the ultimate. One made because the honor of those people were impossible to compromise.
When heroes are mentioned - let their story not be forgotten.-

I'm a big believer in roots Cham! And I admire those across the great water who do hold onto the traditions of their ancestors..

I don't know the exact story to which you refer above but there were many similar instances when reprisals were taken against entire communities.
This is one of the best known and followed the assassination of Reinherd Heydrich, who was appointed deputy Reichs-protektor in September 1941. During his short reign of terror, 5000 anti-Fascist fighters and their helpers were imprisoned.
The whole very grim story is here: http://www.holocaustresearchproject.org/nazioccupa...

Life is not always roses - I'm still nursing poor Maruska who was almost recovered but had a setback :( but is now doing well again - however we're still at the fingers-crossed stage..
The vet comes every day..
Books I'm not sure - the web looks like a more logical medium at the moment. We do a lot of translating and some of that does get printed..
