Tax Advice for Ensign’s Parent
Reply
The parents of Senator John Ensign, a Republican from Nevada, gave his mistress’s family $96,000. Forget the politics of this exchange. Let’s talk taxes.
From news reports it sounds as if the Ensigns didn’t report or pay taxes on the gift, though the details are very fuzzy. If these reports are true, did the Ensigns illegally evade taxes?
According to our article on the gift today, the Ensigns wrote a “single check” in the amount of $96,000, but the money was intended for four different members of the mistress’s family, the Hamptons. From reports, it sounds as if the Ensigns believe the gift should not have been declared or incurred gift taxes because gifts to individuals under $12,000 are tax-free: This one $96,000 check was meant to be re-distributed as eight $12,000 gifts, with four $12,000 gifts coming from Senator Ensign’s mother and another four $12,000 gifts coming from Senator Ensign’s father.

FLASHBACK: Ensign Called On Clinton To Resign After Admitting Affair — ‘He Has No Credibility Left’
Reply
The Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza reports that Sen. John Ensign (R-NV), a member of GOP leadership and a potential candidate for president in 2012, will hold a press conference later today in which he will acknowledge having an extramarital affair “with a campaign staffer who was married to an employee in Ensign’s Senate office.” Ensign flew back to Las Vegas to make the public announcement.
Since his election to the Senate in 2000, Ensign has been a leading conservative voice who demanded the resignation of former Idaho Sen. Larry Craig in September 2007. Ensign called Craig a “disgrace” after he was arrested in June 2007 in an airport men’s restroom on disorderly conduct charges. But when Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) acknowledged having an affair, Ensign didn’t call on him to resign.
Ensign has also been an ardent opponent of gay marriage. In Feb. 2004, Ensign announced his support for an amendment to the Constitution that would have defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Ensign said the amendment, which ultimately failed, was necessary to protect “the institution of marriage“:
“Sadly, the effort to redefine marriage against the wishes of a majority of the people is, with help from activist judges, succeeding,” Ensign said. “In order to defend the institution of marriage, uphold the rights of individual states, and maintain the will of the people, I believe we are compelled to amend our country’s constitution.”
“The effort to pass a constitutional amendment reaffirming marriage as being between a man and a woman only is being undertaken strictly as a defense of marriage against the attempt to redefine it and, in the process, weaken it,” Ensign said. “Marriage is an extremely important institution in this country and protecting it is, in my mind, worth the extraordinary step of amending our constitution.”

The Democrats seem to be the party of corruption at the present. A tax cheat as Treasury Secretary, Ethics problems with the Attorney General, three Daley machine operators as part of the administration, etc. etc.

So congress is trying to keep up with this administration. -

GOP rejects, requests funds from $787 economic stimulus package
Reply
Republican senators Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson voted against the $787 billion economic stimulus package, blasting the bill as a bloated government giveaway.
Their disdain didn't stop them from later asking Defense Secretary Robert Gates to steer $50 million in stimulus money to a constituent's bio-energy project.
Gates didn't do it, but Chambliss, Isakson and other Republican opponents of the stimulus aren't going empty-handed.
Billions of dollars worth of Defense Department stimulus money is paying for repairs and construction at military installations in areas represented by lawmakers who said "no" to the legislation, according to an analysis.
The request from Chambliss and Isakson isn't the only one Gates and other top defense officials received before and after President Barack Obama signed the stimulus law in February. Their pitch stands out, though, because of the GOP's staunch opposition.
As Congress considered the legislation earlier this year, Republicans called it a partisan bill bound to make the size of government grow, not the economy. Not a single House Republican voted in favor of the bill; only three Senate Republicans did so.
Trashing the stimulus and also welcoming the money is a sore point for Democrats who say the GOP can't have it both ways. But Republicans say there's no inconsistency in opposing wasteful spending while also backing worthwhile projects.

Don't take this to mean that I like Rangel, I sure don't.

BUT simply not paying property taxes is not the same as lying and cheating, and the state will deprive him of his property. There are more articles out there which get much deeper into Rangel and income taxes.-

That is not what the liberals were saying about Mrs. McCains property that was delinquent once. Paperwork was being sent the wrong place and the taxes were not paid by the property manager. Liberals said there is no excuse. This is a very liberal congressman so he has to live with what his party said about McCain.

If I was a corrupt politician (like Charlie Rangel "allegedly" is, but that HAS NOT been proven... yet) and if I wanted to get away with being all dirty and corrupty and cheaty on my taxes... I would make sure that the public schools in my district never taught my constituents anything... then I would force them to attend those public schools for 12 years... or drop out and collect welfare checks that I would deliver to them... either way, they would be so stupid that they would re-elect me over and over again and I would be able to lie, cheat and steal my way to tremendous wealth and power! Hahahahahahahahaha!!! Haaahaaaahaaaahaaa (evil laugh).

I hope Charlie doesn't steal my idea (not that HE would steal) before I get a chance to... uh oh... wait a minute!!?... what??... somebody's already doing that?!?... why are all the good ideas already taken? :(
Oh well, I'll just watch my favorite Charlie Rangel video and then I'll feel much better!

I don't know about the rest of you, but aren't you all getting sick and tired of our elected officials not living within the laws that they impose on the rest of us? I mean c'mon, how is it that a multimillionaire spends millions of his own dollars on top of other campaign contributions to get elected to a national political seat that only pays in the low six figures? I think it's because these criminals, republican and democrat alike, know they can vastly enrich themselves as public office holders, knowing that as a powerful politician they'll have little chance of getting caught and if they do get caught, will never be held accountable.

It's high time we demand term limits at the national level and throw all these bums out.-

I don't feel one way or another about Charlie, only those that rush to his defence at every turn.I don't believe he should be in his present position. He claims he was unaware of a five hundred thousand U S dollar checking account. This has nothing to do with his off shore stash.I can hear the excuses from the left, well this is a drop in the bucket against the trillions being spent by this administration,so whas up cons.
