    Individual effort is laudable, cherev, but it isn't dependable. Jesus, a well-known rabbi, instructed that when we give charity that we not let the left hand know what the right hand is doing, yet you inform anyone who cares to read it how charitable you are.

    We have an obligation as a nation to the poor, especially the poor children. They will be the adult citizens tomorrow, and I for one do not want them sick or hungry or cold or ignorant.

      Agreed. But that's MY obligation. If you advocate taking my money so that you can satisfy what you think is my obligation, we have a problem. That's why I want to keep as much of the money I earn as possible...so I can decide the best use of it in fulfilling ALL my obligations.

        You mean like taxing people to bomb children in Iraq? Or to build sports stadiums instead of schools? Or to push Christianist 'abstinence only' programs overseas?
