A new state law requires that Texas public schools incorporate Bible literacy into the curriculum. But the law provides no specific guidelines, funding for materials or teacher training. So high schools are left scrambling to figure out what to teach and how to teach it.

    I took a Bible as Literature course for 1 quarter as a senior in accelerated English in high school. It was an elective, and turned out to be a good course. I was able to raise issues such as the metaphorical, allegorical, folkloric, etc. aspects and some great conversations ensued. It was somewhat like reading Chaucer or Spenser for a course--an old book with archaic terms.

    The Texas requirement sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.
