In over 90 minutes of debate -- and in the first case for newly sworn-in Justice Sonia Sotomayor -- five of the nine justices appeared in favor of easing the historic restrictions imposed by Congress that bar corporations and some labor unions from spending money to help their favored candidates.

But Justice Samuel Alito pointed out that at the state political level, more than half the US states "permit independent corporate expenditures for just these purposes."
"A lot of money is spent in elections in California," he said. "Is there a record that corporations have corrupted the political process there?"
Yes there is! WE passed term limits in an effort to reduce the corporate influence. This is a very bad idea. -

As if the corporations need another way to influence elections, to go with influencing legislation. I think J. Edwards was correct - we'll never reform the politics in washington until we get control over the special interest/corporate money in elections. Yet the ****** of the SCOTUS look to further enable the broken system.

Well, the recent financial scams by corrupt oligarchsbecame possible(and abetted) when century-old laws against things like "bucket shops" were discarded. Seems the Supreme Court wants to repeat the corruption cycle by striking down other legislation that was put in place a century ago when the corrupt oligarchs got out of control (to the extent that troops ended up shooting Americans in the streets to "protect" the oligarchs).
