Sept. 11 training exercise sparks confusion in DC »
Posted By Newperson 3 months, 3 weeks ago in NewsWASHINGTON – The Coast Guard conducted a training exercise in the Potomac River near the Pentagon amid Sept. 11 commemorations Friday, sparking confusion that scrambled FBI agents and led the nearest airport to briefly ground flights.Departures from Reagan National Airport were halted as a precaution at 10:08 a.m., then resumed at 10:30 a.m., Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Diane Spitaliere said. The airport borders the Potomac.
A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said federal agents scrambled to the river scene after the initial reports, because the local FBI office had not been told ahead of time about the exercise. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the incident.
Coast Guard spokesman John Edwards said references to shots fired were picked up in radio chatter. As part of its exercise Friday, the Coast Guard aired simulated instructions to participants to fire 10 rounds. But Edwards said there were no shots actually fired and there were no suspicious boats.

Unacceptable. Whoever had the responsibilty of notification, needs to be fired, demoted, or whatever. If the person in charge didn't bother to appoint someone, kick his butt out, demote him, or whatever. And never give those involved in this fiasco another responsibility higher than cleaning latrines.

Yes, 'spoondaddy', every 9-11 from now on you're going to have to walk on egg shells - unless you have absolutely no imagination, compassion or feeling of loyalty to your own countrymen. Is that a problem for you?

Americans showing a little respect for those who died on 9-11 does not reflect any kind of victory for terrorists - the jihadist nutjobs will only have won when Obama has us all walking on the egg shells of blind multicultural denial.

Remember the statue of liberty flyover photo op, where the the military claimed there was a classified mission to "update their photo files." It caused thousands of new yorkers to stream into the streets of new york.

"Oh God, it was mayhem in here, just mayhem," says Rubin Shimon, manager of Styling Haircutters, a barbershop near Ground Zero. Many people took shelter in the shop to call loved ones on their cellphones. (wsj.com)
Afterwards, an FAA Memo revealed that the military knew it would cause panic. Indeed, it was a pyschological experiment to study human behavior, similar to the H.G. Wells' War on the world broadcast that also sent people running into the streets in 1938.
google "FAA Memo" + "flyover"

well to get people to react might not be a bad thing. as with the fly-over which i personally believe was a dumb thing.

in the event of a real terrorist attack. you would want people to react not stand around i disbelief as on 9/11..
it also shows we are preparing.
remember in a real attack there will be no warning.. it is actually nice to see people respond..
still not a bright thing to do. -

All I'm saying is that today we should be extra carefull, and sometimes not notifying people in certain agencies to see how they react.Could be the best training but on 9/11 is very touchty subject,we all know somebody who passed on that day

Apparently, it's dumb and dumber in the military. Yet, there are some of these blowhards who show up on the right-wing media trading on the "hero" propaganda of the last admin. to rail against the current one. However, there is nothing heroic about killing innocent civilians across the world for no good (or even political) reason. If I were one of them I wouldn't look so smug or mighty as they haven't done anything of value in the wake of 9/11.

After 8 years, the "greatest" Army in the world can't capture Bin Laden. There is still a mess in Afghanistan which will never get better. When the World Trade center was attacked there were many analogies made to Pearl Harbor and WWII but this is much more like fighting insurgents in Vietnam (obviously). Obviously, you could pour as many or more people as the US did in Vietnam and it's going to end the same way. It certainly did for the Russians who couldn't win there, either.
So, one would wish that the armed forces could attract more intelligent people who could act on the obvious but I guess it's difficult to recruit anyone when even the stupid can figure out signing up for service could mean getting likely getting shipped to Iraq to die for the financial interests of companies like Shell.-

Just curiuos when you are going to get up from your computer chair, STEP UP for a government office and change things. It's very cowardly to comment in a negative fashion from the sidelines!!! No one in the US Government/Military performs events without permission from higher Leadership! So, get in there and make changes!! You have such great knowledge on probably in your mind, Everything!!!
Good Luck!!

The 'job' of the coast guard was to inform relevant agencies they were doing maneuvers. They were broadcasting their rhetoric over channels that could be picked up, as CNN did. CNN had no way of knowing that what they were hearing was 'play' and apparently neither did the FBI.

The Coast Guard preforms these exercises several times a year in that area and they follow the same reporting procedures. I believe that CNN was on the prowl for anything that would add drama to their 9/11 aniversary coverage. In their race to be first they started broadcasting an unverfied report. I bet this could have been avoided with on phone call to the CG press liason for the DC area. But then again they may not have been first to report had they taken the time to assure the accuracy of what they were reporting.
