Hmmm, most "consultants" as they are sometimes called charge a fee percentage on the amount you owe. So .. not only do you owe the creditors but now you owe the consultant as well. Handle it yourself by waiting for the letter that offers to take 50% of what you owe. Then, give them a call and offer 50% of the amount AFTER subtracting the interest and make arrangements to pay that amount (the principle) in installments not exceeding 6 months. Also, each state has a time limit (statute of limitations) set for the collection of the debt after which you don't have to pay anything. Louisiana is three years. The "however" to this is that IF you let your guard down and agree that the debt is yours, then the statute begins at that point in time. Collection agents will play this game with you trying at the last minute to suck you in to agreeing that the debt is yours and so on, after which it starts all over again.
