EDITORIAL: Obama's doves come home to roost - Washington Times »
Posted By icono1 2 months, 2 weeks ago in Political OpinionIt was an article of faith to Democrats during the latter years of the George W. Bush administration that Afghanistan was the "right war," in contrast to the "wrong war" in Iraq. Taking a vocal stand for Afghanistan enabled them to slam President Bush's unpopular Iraq policy while adopting a fashionably hawkish stand on the war on terrorism. No one likes al Qaeda, and this posture gave then-candidate Barack Obama the chance to say tough-guy things like, "We must make it clear that if Pakistan cannot or will not act, we will take out high-level terrorist targets like bin Laden if we have them in our sights." Because Iraq was the idee fixe of the antiwar crowd, talking about Afghanistan wasn't likely to alienate the doves so long as Iraq was roundly denounced. Anyway, they knew it was just political posturing, right?

"Sometimes less is more, but that is a hard sell in a White House that is convinced that more government is the answer to all the world's problems."

Often it's terribly difficult to know if one should plant the left foot or the right foot on the politically correct platform. So much about one's opinions about war seem dictated upon which side one favors, much less than one who contemplates and decides for oneself. -

Some people are learning that being a Monday morning quarterback or an armchair general is a tad less demanding than being the real McCoy. And Obama, it seems to me, had not a clue what to expect. He knows what he wants to do, but not a clue about how to do it. He was NOT ready for prime time.

So it would seem. Sometimes I think he is planning his statist agenda, other times I think he is just a useful tool for a group of statists.

He is in a quandary. If he pushes the far-left agenda, his Democratic members in Congress will lose in next year's elections, and he will be a powerless president. If he doesn't push the far-left agenda, his usefulness as a tool is over and he may be challenged in 2012 by another more useful tool.
Today (Saturday, the 12th), he is pitching his health care program, taking away news coverage of the tens of thousands of TEA party protesters in Washington, DC and other places. In perusing the dial, other than Fox, I only saw fleeting coverage on BBC and a small snippet on CNN asking a protester about his opinion of the congressman who said "You lie!" during Obama's congressional address.
Once again, the MSM is disparaging and ignoring the many people of both parties who don't like his government. -

the reality is that pakistan and al qaeda are both REAL problems that must be dealt with.

obama should move to a policy of containment where al qaeda is concerned and strategize in that direction rather than trying to nation build or anything like that.
and it sure sux that we wasted all that time and money and resources on Iraq. -

if you would told a liberal a couple years ago that the next president would be a Democrat; and that he would continue torture, warrantless spying, detention without a trial, and the war on terror -- he would have thought you were absolutely crazy.

There is an anti-war crowd on the left, many whom don't care much for the socialistic and entitlement aspects of the democratic party. but their anti-war movement was hijacked by the democrats, so now they are married to the status quo.

same could be said for the war on terror. we've been married to the official line. This is why, as a registered Republican, I spend my time bashing mainstream white house nonsense_and_ mainstream GOP personalities.
The lesson learned is to quit towing the party line. They're just going to suck you into all the nonsense. Stick to your principles, regardless of what the party wants.-

I have quit the Republican Party after almost 50 years. I've watched them slide from macho to wimp in that period of time. They pay no attention to their base - even to get re-elected. I can't really say the Democrats do better. I'll never vote liberal, but am in the market for a really good conservative (with moral convictions) to join. Only way to go, tadair, vote with your brain, not your party and not with your heart, whether liberal or conservative. If people would have always done that, I doubt we'd be in the mess we are in now.

The invasion of Afghanistan is the only war that I've ever supported. I guess that makes me pretty doveish. Of all the wars we've been in this is the only one that was in response to an attack on the US. It's a lot easier to start a war than to end one so you really need to think out your strategy and goals before hand. Bush wasn't one to think much. It should have been fought with sufficient forces to prevent the escape of the primary targets. It wasn't. Iraq was just for money. I was and still am opposed to any war in Iraq and we should be out of there now. We also need to leave Afghanistan as soon as possible because, while we could have won it, that opportunity has long past.
