Video: President Obama's Weekly Address - Losing Insurance Can Happen To Anybody »
Posted By TimALoftis 2 months, 2 weeks ago in Political OpinionThe President discusses a staggering new report from the Treasury Department indicating that under the status quo, around half of all Americans under 65 will lose their health coverage at some point over the next ten years. He pledges not to allow this future to unfold: "In the United States of America, no one should have to worry that they'll go without health care – not for one year, not for one month, not for one day. And once I sign my health reform plan into law – they won't."

If you don't type the "http://" the URL doesn't post as an active link. Which would be good enough for someone to cut and paste, except if it's a long link, Propeller truncates it.

He's seems to be talking about half of all Americans under 65 losing their health care insurance, but isn't he really talking about losing their jobs? Isn't the majority of health insurance in this country provided by or through employers? Could he possibly be saying that in the next ten years, half of all Americans will be out of a job? Isn't this more of the same double-speak we heard during his campaign? Promises that aren't really promises, and lies that aren't really lies?

COBRA allows you to keep your health insurance for up to 18 months if you lose your job.

But even if Obama was talking about people who will lose their jobs (and he wasn't), what difference would that make? Under the current system and without reform, if your employer provides insurance and you lose your job--and you don't pay the premiums to keep your insurance under COBRA--you lose your healthcare insurance.
So, no, it's not "more of the same double-speak we heard during his campaign." Your comment, however, is more of the same deliberate distraction from and obfuscation of factual information to make it appear the healthcare situation in this country is not as bad as it is that we've been hearing nonstop from opponents of healthcare reform since the presidential campaign.
Read the Treasury Dept. report (linked above your comment) for further details.

Its one thing to lose your health care, but if you,and your family are living in your car,or under a bridge, insurance is way down on the list of your needs.A simple job would solve more of your problems than health insurance. So Mr. president if you could hurry up on the turtle tunnels in Florida, and make just a little of your time avalible for creating jobs. What if the small business people promise not to make a profit, would that help you make up your mind to spend some of your money (stimulus)on job creation.

I posted this comment in response to an article titled ' White House economists: 1 million-plus jobs saved or created by stimulus... ', and got one negative rating:

A million jobs! That's great! Just remember, we're going to need the first 787 million dollars each of those people earn to repay the debt that created their jobs. Let's see, at the new, higher minimum wage of $7.25/hour, they'll have to work 80 hours per week for the next 26,000 years. That's not including the interest on that debt. Oh, and no vacations.

It's a good thing they are going to get a break on their health care, or they might just work themselves to death.

Sorry I didn't watch the video but would like to make a comment on Americans losing their health care coverage. Over the nest ten years it really doesn't matter what sort of coverage a person has, whether it is through a private insurance plan or under a public system that we have up here, the fact is that the cost is going to go up dramatically.
Reply
This is going to lead to people not being able to afford the premiums themselves as well as companies scaling back on the plans that they have for their employees. Even under our system up here we are going to be faced with increased taxes to pay for what we receive, both systemes are going to be faced with an ever increasing demand by a aging group of people, and also more and better treatments for the people who use either system.
The simple fact that I see is that in the next ten years healthcare will be unaffordable under either system. Your system even if left unchanged will result in more people looking to the government for coverage which will result in increased taxes, and our system will either have reduced coverage or increased taxes to cover the costs.
Do I have a solution for the problem, well not for our system ,but if down there you address one problem at a time you might come out better in the long run. Two solutions I feel could help are tort reform and making the medicare program work better. If a means test was used for allowing people to qualify for medicare it would place the responsibility on those who can afford medical insurance but chose not to and it might help those who honestly cannot afford coverage. -

What freedom are you refering to? The ability to continue paying extortionate insurance bills or the freedom to die uninsured? You personally can pay your insurance without thinking of the sums involved but not every american citizen is as lucky as you. Far better to have a National Health Service as we have in the UK where everyone is covered. But I suppose you would prefer to see the top 10 health insurance companies in the US increase their profits since 2002 by 428%.
