i remember an article about how spammers were simply exporting the job to india.

they wrote a script that would take the image, send it to an indian guy who would get paid 10 cents for every correct kaptcha that he entered in.
they averaged 4 out 10 correct every minute, which was worth it to the spammer who still turned a profit while a translator was typing away from some remote location. -
