The Secret Service and the D.C. police brought in three dozen vehicles and shut down H Street, Vermont Avenue, two lanes of I Street and an entrance to the McPherson Square Metro station. They swept the area, in front of the Department of Veterans Affairs, with bomb-sniffing dogs and installed magnetometers in the middle of the street, put up barricades to keep pedestrians out, and took positions with binoculars atop trucks. Though the produce stand was only a block or so from the White House, the first lady hopped into her armored limousine and pulled into the market amid the wail of sirens.

Had it been a republican first lady wasting tax dollars so carelessly while buying $20 a pound, organically and hydroponically grown arugula, while under secret service escort and while disrupting rush hour traffic (Commoners and working class be damned... It's MICHELLE!) I would remain silent...
Of course, it didn't dawn on Michelle to send one of her 23 paid secretaries or aids out to get the arugula...

if Obama could resist the temptation to turn everything into a TEACHABLE MOMENT he wouldn't continually be under this scrutiny. He lectures everyone that we must learn to live with less, that we all must sacrifice. We cant eat as much as we want , we can not keep out homes as warm as we want. He them proceeds to feed his guests at his weekly Wednesday night parties $100.00/lb Kobe beef. He keep his White House office at 80 degrees in the winter months, Michelle goes on her overseas shopping junkets with the children, and he goes out of his way to lecture us to sacrifice, that we all must have some skin in it He pontificates to everyone, you drink the kool aid and then the two of them go on their merry way with out a clue.

BTW where does Inactive suggest she ditch her secret service protection. No such claim is made . What he is suggesting is that in light of Obama's constant lecturing to us on fiscal responsibility, they should lead by example and curtail their extravagance a little. -

I just got home from the farmers market. Got fresh, fresh okra, just-picked sweet corn, heirloom tomatoes. And yes, I paid a little (not a lot) more than I would have paid at the corporate food mart, but so what? The food is tastier, and the money goes into the pockets of my neighbors instead of being routed to some remote corporate headquarters.
I also grow and sell locally. Only a little, as I am building my garden a bit at a time, but it will get better.
Don't think I'll be seeing the First Lady any time soon, though. -

As I understand it, the White House has a budget for these sorts of outings. It's not as if she was robbing the coffers of some other program. And no, there is no provision that the remainders of one budget be transferred to another.

As for 'disrupting traffic', didn't the 9/12 march do the same thing? HeII, is there a day in DC when traffic is NOT disrupted? They had Pennsylvania Avenue from Freedom Park to the Capitol blocked off for the better part of a full day. What was their 'carbon footprint' for the day, what with all the extra police and emergency staff on hand? Couldn't that 'taxpayer money' have been better spent elsewhere? -

Housing and food for the homeless... only under Dumya did the poverty increase with the Dumya depression adding even more to poverty and foreclosures! Hey,how many repuggovernors refused the stimulus tthat would have helped those poor areas (?) - Texas, Alaska (Palin tried), Alabama, Georgia, Pennsylvania... predominantly states which have the lowest ratings in taking care of fellow Americans that you mention - mostly red states for sure! I once had the honor (dishonor?) of running into Dick Cheney. Well.. I didn't actually run into him. I was driving to a job and was stopped in traffic. We had to wait about 25 minutes for no apparent reason. Then about 28 or 30 identical Escalades sped by the cross street up ahead. 5 minutes later (yes, they still made us wait) they let us go. This is standard procedure for security. In the future, she should let a staffer do her shopping for her.

Shopping at your local farmer's market is a good thing, and very likely, when you do it, you may even be able to walk there and back. Promoting this, on the part of the First Lady, cannot be an easy thing. Do you really oppose health care reform and efforts to keep jobs in America because of Michael Moore?
These people are spokesmen for larger issues. They use their public clout to the advantage of something bigger than themselves. I'm sure you would prefer they keep their traps shut, but I don't. If someone has to fly in a jet to attend an event that raises the awareness for thousands of people, then there is a net gain.

I watched Bush's motorcade in Phoenix nearly shut down the city during rush hour, as he had a preposterously huge police escort and took an elaborate route to avoid actually having to drive past the anti-war protestors (us.)

First Ladies have always took up some cause for which they can use their formidable public presence to forward. Yes, we DO all need to support local farmers over large agri-biz, for that is the best way to keep your local economy vibrant and healthy. Sure it costs more, because these folks do not have access to economies of scale, but their products are tastier and healthier and it nice to be able to shake the hand of a farmer.
