Born Again? »
Posted By pacodecabra 3 months, 1 week ago in ReligionFor any number of reasons, the term “born-again Christian” brings up a wide variety of images, from Billy Graham’s evangelistic campaigns to Jimmy Swaggart to the guy in the end zone with the multi-colored afro and the “John 3:16” sign. But what does it really mean to be born again? Ironically, multi-colored afro guy is pretty close.

I realize you were probably just trying to be "smart."
(Actually, the word "disingenuous" comes to mind.)
But, since you asked........
The Christian Bible says exactly how "that would work."
Romans chapter 10, verse 13 says "whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
Your gender or past do not matter. The Bible says "whoever."

My understanding is that "born again" and "evangelism" are one and the same. I find certain characteristics of evangelicalism to be very disturbing.

I believe everyone has the right to believe as they choose. Freedom of religion is a constitutionally guaranteed right provided in the religion clauses of the First Amendment. Freedom of religion is also closely associated with separation of church and state, a concept advocated by Thomas Jefferson.
I strongly oppose the agenda of the Christian right (often evangelicals)when it involves political influence. Religion is too important an aspect of human life to be prostituted to politics, just as politics is too important a part of human life to be enslaved to religion. To most of us, the manipulative invoking of religion to advance a politician, a party, or an issue is frightening and divisive.
I also find evangelizing to be a very offensive practice. I once worked with someone deeply involved in evangelicalism, and he considered himself to be reborn. He proceeded to proselytize to me every hour of everyday. I was (am) content with my own beliefs, and unfortunately I had to be rude to him in order to get him to stop harassing me.
To summarize, I accept others right to believe as they choose. I loose respect when religion is used to further a political agenda, and when one tries to cram their beliefs down my throat.
