People who suffer a traumatic brain injury from a car crash or other mishap are more apt to survive if they had been drinking at the time of the injury, according to a study published Monday.

    I've always heard that somewhat inebriated victims of accidents do better because their bodies are more relaxed at the moment of impact, reducing muscle and bone injury. It's hard for me to buy the idea the article proposes that "alcohol protects the brain," though it's true that anything that reduces inflammation of brain tissue would improve a patient's chances.

    I've heard those stories too, that because you were drinking at the time of the accident, your body is more relaxed and you are more apt to survive a serious bone/muscle injury. It's interesting to read that this might also be true for the brain...
