We are bombarded on all fronts with fallacious logic today, recognizing it is the first step towards intellectual honesty.
Without this honesty, no debate is even possible.

      Nice piece RFE!
      I wanted MORE!
And good to see you in action - overdue!
I wasn't able to watch the video yet, sleeping beauties of different species - so what I was left wondering was - what did Aristotle ACTUALLY call an ad hominem attack - or was it all Greek to him? :)

Well, RFE, you're a braver man than I to step into the murky world of the illogical. I've written several pieces on logic and haven't posted them simply because I didn't think it would be worth it to have to defend a reasonable, logical and rational position from people who are not reasonable, logical or reasonable.
If you'll look on my Facebook page you'll notice I am currently in a discussion with someone who said the following, which may be the worst example of circular reasoning (it's easily the most succinct) that I've ever seen:

"It's (murder) biblical because it's biblical."

      And there you have it.

And I've almost completely given up on fending off adhomins. What's the point? You can lead a horse to water, but only Chuck Norris can make him drink.

      Excellent, rfe.

The recent language adopted by the far right about anyone who is not a theist refers to them as "hating God," which is an ad hominem attack based on a bait and switch. In effect, it's a counterfeit communication which attempts to demonize a group rather than state a fact. Not believing a supernatural magical metaphorical deity actually exists has absolutely nothing to do with "hating" such a being.

It also comes into play when anyone who disagrees with any of President Obama's policy positions or appointee choices is called a "racist." Throwing everyone into the same ad hominem bucket discredits all of them, and is simply a powerplay.
