Liberals and Civility: Why Democrats Should Welcome a Rough Debate »

Posted By Tumultuous 3 months ago in Political Opinion

Now that their summer of bluster is over, conservatives may congratulate themselves on a job well done. The stout-hearted defenders of freedom declared that government could never work, sometimes citing examples of misgovernment drawn from periods of conservative rule to make their case.

They may debate the Patriot Act all they want...but why debate what is set as vested?
vested- fixed and absolute and without contingency; "a vested right"

      FTA:

In truth, there has been no better time for a vindication of activist, Rooseveltian government since the 1930s. The laissez-faire faith lies in pieces around us. Conservative dogmatism lay behind many of the Bush administration's worst blunders, including some of the monumental screw-ups to which conservative pundits point when denouncing government generally.

When I was growing up, there were two things that I was taught were bad things to avoid. Laissez-faire economics, which brought us...The Great Depression. And the far right wingers, like the John Birch Society and McCarthy.

So far this century we have had both. And we are far poorer for it. Both financially, and most importantly, morally. We have to push back against those criminals and push them back into the darkness of their hiding holes. These fringe lunatics are un American Fascists who are bent on ruining our country. Fight back!

"Democrats have been here all along and have very few positive results to counter with the very few positive GOP results."

We sometimes forget that the social accomplishments that some of us treasure are products of the liberal movement that inspired the greatest moral and political achievements of the 19th and 20th century. The abolition of slavery and child labor; womens suffrage; trade union rights; the end of sweatshops; minimum wage; the weekend; health and pension plans; unemployment; Social Security and Medicare; the civil rights movement; food safety legislation; the consumer and environmental movement; and the pro-choice movement. Not all may agree that these are positive accomplishments, but they are progressive accomplishments never the less.

Every substantial improvement in the lives of the American people has been initiated by liberals and opposed by conservatives.

Why is it that the right-wing always stand shoulder to shoulder in solidarity, while liberals fall among themselves? Liberals need to borrow from the conservative book of political warfare, and learn to utilize what they avoid.
