New satellite information shows that ice sheets in Greenland and western Antarctica continue to shrink faster than scientists thought and in some places are already in runaway melt mode.

It always melts faster just before or during some world meeting on global change, then it returns to normal.

I wonder how Greenland ever got it's name? Maybe global warming back then too? Wonder who caused it then, maybe vikings?

the Vikings called it greenland to encourage emigration there, just like they called iceland 'iceland' to discourage emigration there, because there were already enough, to their liking, Vikings there.

it didn't help that Greenland at the time was probably at its warmest in thousands of years. the Viking colonies there didn't last 100 years before it became to cold to farm and they all starved to death.

it was just a peppy real estate name.

Count 'em above. one con, two cons, three cons. They fill in the catagory of lemmings, paid by coal burning billionaires, who would literally murder every man, woman and child, including their own children, to make just one more dime, to keep the money and power in the hands of coal industry billioniares.

These lying, gutless cowards, will never admit that their motivation is the same as all cons, to make the rich richer. No lie is to extreme, no murder, no environmental disaster leading to massive death, to preserve money and power in the hands that hold them. Extremism in the name of greed is no vice, the mantra of Caribu Barbie voters, and all lying theives from the party of GOP cons.

ABW,,I don't know why you try do debate reality with the 'deniers',they have a reliable tendency to ignore science...after all, those educated independent scientists are obviously 'elitists' and not the sort of people you can trust.Much better to trust the PR. arms of global financiers and oil/gas corporations to get all the information that you need, after all,it is much more comfy for the ignorant to be told that there is no problem, you don't have to do anything differently, move on,there is nothing to see here!!!
Remember that all these NASA and British Antarctic try to confuse the issue with those nasty 'fact' things.Beavith was correct regarding the nice real-estate name given to 'Greenland' however it was only Green for a few hundred year period, during the medieval warm period, which was not a global phenomenon, but a relatively short - lived anomaly in the northern european area

there are plenty of sites on you tube and on the internet, that have credible scientists from NASA and the IPCC discussing these issues, however the GW deniers are not renowned for their research into reality...comfy lies if told to them enough by their propaganda masters at fox..et al are all they need to know.these deniers are intellectual derelicts, they do the mental equivalent of pulling the duvet covers over their heads like child does.,believing that if they can't/won't see it then it can't affect them. That is their general attitude to unpalatable truths and information that opposes their warped view of reality, thank goodness those people are becoming an ever decreasing sect.Don'try to give them facts they only know corporate propaganda,no matter how many times they are proven to be on the wrong side of an argument, they refuse to admit it or learn from past mistakes, thats why these people live in the past and have nothing to offer the future of this planet and its'peoples

Oceans are huge heat sinks. The Earth was in a warming trend for about 25 to 30 years and the heat was being absorbed by the oceans. The warmer water will cause ice at the edges to melt and break. All normal, all natural.

We're now in a cooling trend and the heat will slowly be given off by the ocean, moderating the temperature change.

Because of the past heating trend, there was increased evaporation of the oceans and, therefore, increased snowfalls so the total ice area of Antarctica increased.

It has happened before as the Earth went through warming and cooling trends. No cause for alarm.

Interesting thing about climate changes is that there are so many data and trends that each side can find something to lend support to its cause.
