Uninsured Young Woman Delays Treatment, Dies From Swine Flu »
Posted By TechnologyExpert 2 months, 1 week ago in NewsKimberly Young, 22, died from swine flu on Wednesday. Sadly, it has been reported that she delayed treatment due to a lack of health insurance. Although there's no guarantee that earlier treatment would have saved her life, it would be hard to find a more obvious example of the need to fix our broken health insurance system.

Exactly how does the ignorance of a woman who needed medical attention fit the most obvious example of overhauling an entire healthcare system?
There are several un-answered questions as to WHY she didn't have medical insurance, WHY she thought it was too expensive to not get medical attention, WHY she couldn't go to her family for help, the list of questions goes on and on. I feel sorry that she passed away, but at some point, don't people have to take some form of responsibility for thier own actions?-

Absolutely agree with you. People have to take responsibility for their own actions or inactions.

It's sad that this happened, but even without health insurance, she still could have gone to emergency and gotten treatment earlier instead of doing what so many people do and wait till things get critical.
As the "blogger" rightly said, there still was no guarantee that even earlier treatment would have saved her, so he shouldn't be pointing his finger at our current health insurance system. he should be pointing to her own lack of even bothering to go to the emergency room, which possibly could have helped.

"Government should have stepped in and allowed her treatment."

How would the government know she was sick? Should her friend, Brent Mowery, have turned her in? There is no indication that she was seeking medical care, nor is there any indication that she informed the government that she was sick. We only have her friend and former roommate saying that she would have gone to a doctor if she had health insurance.
Her friend knew enough to drive her to the hospital when she got worse, why did Mowery not take her to the hospital before the situation turned bad? Apparently, her friend knew how to get treatment so the information must be out there.
She was "only" 21. She, like most young people of that age, likely thought she was invincible and did not need insurance.
Too young to know what she needed? This is a college graduate! What does that say about the educational system even at the college level? Better yet, what does it say about parents who don't teach their children the facts of real life?

Tod396-nothing broken in the system and nothing proposed in HR 3200 or ANY amendments that would even remotely fix this problem. But you have the right questions about why she didn't seek available help.

Tamiflu, which is used to treat or as prophylaxis, is available free from any county health dept which in turn has made it available at no charge to Hospitals. The feds (under Bush plans from last year) made it available in the Spring 2009 in caches distributed across the country. Unfortunately, the information didn't get to this woman in time to help her. Tamiflu must be started within the first 48 hours of flu-like symptoms, and may help to lighten the illness and/or shorten the course.
Illegals know the system and would go to ERs when they are sick and likely be given the Tamiflu. (Antibiotics don't help unless pneumonia develops). There is no lack of access or $$$.
Sandlc-I would suggest that you read the 86 page 'report to the president on the pandemic H1N1'. He didn't include any infectious disease physicians on the 'expert' panel, nor anyone from CDC, NIH, or anyone with experience from Mexico or the southern hemisphere, where the swine flu is wide spread. The report does not take the H1N1 program down to the Hospital and operational levels and does not include professional information to the public. You may blame him for lack of appropriate detail and lack of follow-up. Obama should be making public services announcements on TV for the flu vaccines rather than multiple appearances to push for a govt takeover of healthcare that won't help. Watch what he DOES, not what he SAYS.
From the same plans started last year, over 200 million doses of the H1N1 flu vaccine will be coming to us beginning in about mid-October from companies OUTSIDE the USA-Sanofi-Pasteur in France, GSK in GB, and CSL in Australia, adn a couple of others. Distribution will be made through each state govt.to Hospitals and Clinics.
Thanks to excessive malpractice and liability insurance costs, several companies in the USA stopped making flu vaccines back in the late 90s. We need tort reform at the top of the healthcare agenda.
One of the main criteria for administration is to YOUNG people under the age of 24 who seem to be extremely vulnerable to the swine flu because of lower immunity. However, the H1N1 production may have reduced availability of the seasonal flu vaccine, made by the same companies. I suggest that you all get the seasonal if available. Again, the local public health depts hold free clinics for the seasonal beginning in Sept and Oct.
I am writing to my local high schools to convince the Administrations to encourage students to get the vaccines when available. -

I hope they stay heatlhy, too, but mostly I wish that people only have the number of children that they can absolutely care for. I have one child. Why? Beacause I knew without a doubt that I could pay for her from birth through college Your chldren are your responsibility and yours alone. Not mine or your neighbor's or the governments.

In March I was unfortunate enough to have to go to the emergency on a Saturday night. It was like a Spanish Cantina in there. With all of the private exam rooms occupied by drunks and beligerants, I laid in the hallway for 13 hours until there was an opening in the operating room for the emergency surgery I required. While I laid there, HUNDREDS of people -- probably a mix of legal and illegal -- came through. The one that impressed me the most was a woman whose young daughter had a splinter in herfinger. THE EMERGENCY ROOM!!
