Uninsured Young Woman Delays Treatment, Dies From Swine Flu »

Posted By TechnologyExpert 2 months, 1 week ago in News

Kimberly Young, 22, died from swine flu on Wednesday. Sadly, it has been reported that she delayed treatment due to a lack of health insurance. Although there's no guarantee that earlier treatment would have saved her life, it would be hard to find a more obvious example of the need to fix our broken health insurance system.

I find this hard to believe. As much as it's publicized, the swine flu should fall under those HEPPA regs that say her condition was "a potential threat to heads of state". She should have been quarantined and treated on the spot.

FTA: "Although there's no guarantee that earlier treatment would have saved her life, it would be hard to find a more obvious example of the need to fix our broken health insurance system."

Exactly how does the ignorance of a woman who needed medical attention fit the most obvious example of overhauling an entire healthcare system?

There are several un-answered questions as to WHY she didn't have medical insurance, WHY she thought it was too expensive to not get medical attention, WHY she couldn't go to her family for help, the list of questions goes on and on. I feel sorry that she passed away, but at some point, don't people have to take some form of responsibility for thier own actions?

      FGS !!, she was only 21. Remember 18, 19, 20, 21.
The information is not out there.
Too young to know what she needed.
Govt should have stepped in and allowed her treatment.

I totally disagree, she could have walk into any hospital in America, and receive emergency care .Countless illegals do it every single day.So lets quit politicking.

If she actually could not access the care she needed due to lack of $$$ and lack of insurance, that would make her one of the roughly 18,000 Americans per year who die due to lack of access to treatment.

Tod396-nothing broken in the system and nothing proposed in HR 3200 or ANY amendments that would even remotely fix this problem. But you have the right questions about why she didn't seek available help.

Tamiflu, which is used to treat or as prophylaxis, is available free from any county health dept which in turn has made it available at no charge to Hospitals. The feds (under Bush plans from last year) made it available in the Spring 2009 in caches distributed across the country. Unfortunately, the information didn't get to this woman in time to help her. Tamiflu must be started within the first 48 hours of flu-like symptoms, and may help to lighten the illness and/or shorten the course.

Illegals know the system and would go to ERs when they are sick and likely be given the Tamiflu. (Antibiotics don't help unless pneumonia develops). There is no lack of access or $$$.

Sandlc-I would suggest that you read the 86 page 'report to the president on the pandemic H1N1'. He didn't include any infectious disease physicians on the 'expert' panel, nor anyone from CDC, NIH, or anyone with experience from Mexico or the southern hemisphere, where the swine flu is wide spread. The report does not take the H1N1 program down to the Hospital and operational levels and does not include professional information to the public. You may blame him for lack of appropriate detail and lack of follow-up. Obama should be making public services announcements on TV for the flu vaccines rather than multiple appearances to push for a govt takeover of healthcare that won't help. Watch what he DOES, not what he SAYS.

From the same plans started last year, over 200 million doses of the H1N1 flu vaccine will be coming to us beginning in about mid-October from companies OUTSIDE the USA-Sanofi-Pasteur in France, GSK in GB, and CSL in Australia, adn a couple of others. Distribution will be made through each state govt.to Hospitals and Clinics.

Thanks to excessive malpractice and liability insurance costs, several companies in the USA stopped making flu vaccines back in the late 90s. We need tort reform at the top of the healthcare agenda.

One of the main criteria for administration is to YOUNG people under the age of 24 who seem to be extremely vulnerable to the swine flu because of lower immunity. However, the H1N1 production may have reduced availability of the seasonal flu vaccine, made by the same companies. I suggest that you all get the seasonal if available. Again, the local public health depts hold free clinics for the seasonal beginning in Sept and Oct.

I am writing to my local high schools to convince the Administrations to encourage students to get the vaccines when available.

Is funny the headline UNISURED woman dies, first there is not much you can do with a flu, drink plenty of fluids, tylenol for fever or maybe some antiviral drugs. Every year thousands die of flu related complications.

She could have gotten treatment at any one of the emergency room facilities in her area. ER's are not able to turn anyone away based on insurance or non insurance status.

In March I was unfortunate enough to have to go to the emergency on a Saturday night. It was like a Spanish Cantina in there. With all of the private exam rooms occupied by drunks and beligerants, I laid in the hallway for 13 hours until there was an opening in the operating room for the emergency surgery I required. While I laid there, HUNDREDS of people -- probably a mix of legal and illegal -- came through. The one that impressed me the most was a woman whose young daughter had a splinter in herfinger. THE EMERGENCY ROOM!!
