Americans who fail to pay the penalty for not buying insurance would face legal action from the Internal Revenue Service, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation.

The remarks Thursday from the committee's chief of staff, Thomas Barthold, seems to further weaken President Barack Obama's contention last week that the individual mandate penalty, which could go as high as $1,900, is not a tax increase.
Under questioning from Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.), Barthold said the IRS would "take you to court and undertake normal collection proceedings."
Ensign pursued the line of questioning because he said a lot of Americans don't believe the Constitution allows the government to mandate the purchase of insurance. -

Throughout this debate over healthcare, many Americans have argued that a mandate to purchase health insurance in unconstitutional. It looks like somebody in Washington finally woke up and took the message to the Joint Committee on Taxation. Senator John Ensign (a Republican from Nevada) asked the Committee's Chief of Staff, Thomas Barthold, about the penalty for not obtaining health insurance. Barthold came back with the following response:
People who fail to pay the $1,900 fee for not purchasing coverage under Obamacare would be charged with a misdemeanor, charged a penalty of up to $25,000 or face up to a year in jail.
Now remember, Barack Obama does NOT consider this mandate a tax. Just last weekend with George Stephanopoulos, Obama said, "The -- for us to say that you've got to take a responsibility to get health insurance is absolutely not a tax increase. What it's saying is, is that we're not going to have other people carrying your burdens for you anymore than the fact that right now everybody in America, just about, has to get auto insurance. Nobody considers that a tax increase." Now we have already been through this asinine argument about auto insurance versus health insurance. It's a crock. But if the government has the ability to through you in jail over failure to purchase health insurance, that is a tax.
Even knowing this, Republican (RINO) Senator Olympia Snowe crossed the isle last week and voted with the Democrats to reject an amendment that would have eliminated this individual mandate. -

the absurdity is that congress and/or obama is even considering a law anything like this.

before the "Patriot Act," who would have thought that preventive detention, or warrantless wire-tapping with immunity for the telcos could happen? -

Are you so sure? Where are the Jobs for people to make money to keep the economy going? Where is the lowering of prices for food? Why haven't our elected put a cap on private enterprise? Why should I have to pay what little money I have for something I don't need? Did you know that certain companies are now saying that 34hrs is considered full-time. I can't live on that. Can you? This has been purposly done by the people we have elected. It started with Nixion and the Dems are no exception to the rule. They are giving our people no choice but to commit a crime to stay alive or die and call their selves Christian. Health care is needed in this Country. A healthy country is a prosperous country. We are no where near that. They are not making the laws to see that we the People can prosper. Making more jail birds, will make them more money. What I'd like to know is how do they feed all these people they put in prison for hanged if you do or don't laws? This might be a false story, but the issue is real enough.

Loks like more fear mongering by the insurance industry. If they can make even bigger profits of Obama's plan they will spend whatever it take to stop this. After all there is a lot of million dollar insurance execs bonuses at stake here.

The second part of the article I couldn't agree with more. In the U.S. it is all about sick care not about health care, and the medical profession and drug companies don't want people to be healthy; otherwise, they won't be able to make $trillions. If everybody were healthy, then nobody would need to buy drugs or go to a doctor.

In addition, I have a relative who is a diabetic and until recently he bought his diabetic supplies in the U.S. and was required to see a doctor just to get his yearly prescription, nothing less than racketeering. However, to his surprise he contacted Canada and now he gets his diabetic supplies from Canada for less than 1/2 it would cost him in the U.S. and he doesn't need a prescription.
Like the author of this story, I don't have health insurance and I haven't been to a doctor in 15 years. Without patients and without people buying drugs, the medical profession would be greatly downsized and the drug companies would simply go out of business. Its not about the government compelling us to buy healthcare insurance, its about the medical profession and the drug companies needing people to be sick. -
