Hold on stubby. Please tell me the last time when the left supported President Bush during the war? Most of the left could be accused of not supporting the war efforts. The media made claims that voting for McCain was another 4 years of Bush. McSame.... So now if you question, critisize or insult the president you're evil but when you guys did it, that was patriotic? We're talking a sporting event. We're not talking about the men and women still fighting in Afghanistan. The next time Michelle Obama talks of her sacrifices while flying first class to Brussels, you may want to reminder of what real sacrifice is. Being first lady isn't close to a grunt being shot at while the president can't figure out if we need more troops or not.

Rachel is a class act who always not only provides facts to support her position, she then asks those she interviews.... if she got it right as a further crosscheck... no one has refuted her yet, that I've seen!

There really are a lot of un-americans that she, obermann and john dean have exposed (john in his latest book, Broken Gevernment) - the repugs and their ignorant, greedy, bigotted supporters! -

What this fool does not understand is that in Chicago it is a 47% to 46% in for/against of having the Olympics there. The reason for the half against it is the fact that it would eat up a ton of money in taxes to pay for it and while it would be there traffic would be horrendous to go back and forth to work. Only in 1984 was there an Olympic that paid for itself.

You're right that many Chicagoans didn't want the Olympics to be held here. I'm one of them.
Reply
That said, President Obama, as the leader of a country that would benefit economically from hosting the Olympics, was right to go. Brazil's Lula also went to Copenhagen. And as y_soitenly--a Chicagoan who wanted to see the games hosted here, reminded me the other day, both the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics paid for themselves and made a profit. -

ENDO - As Beau 7890 wrote below your post, 3 Olympic events have turned a profit DURING THE EVENT ITSELF.
Reply
Note that all 3 profitable Olympics have been on US soil. Why shouldn't Chicago try to snare an Olympic Games for itself?
Having said that, why would other nations and cities even want to touch the Olympic games if historically they lose money for the host? Because they can see all the countless benefits down the road.
Just think about it - better roads and sewers, more hotels, more restaurants, more tourist attractions, more prestige to attract tourists, better facilities to train their local athletes for the future, improved television transmission facilities, more advertising dollars, etc. Less noticed is the fact that the host nation usually stands a better chance to garner medals for its athletes -

The whole region was unhappy. The costs would have been astronomical and I'm not sure how it would have been paid. Businesses are leaving all of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin for better business climates. If we were strapped with more taxes for a sporting event like the Olympics, it would have been very, very bad.

I agree with Rachel Maddow that the ugly and un-American response from the Republicans will reverberate for months to years to come. This completely negative response arises from the same mean spiritedness that Limbaugh exhibited when he declared he wanted Obama to lose in his stimulus plan.
Reply
Obama did not sway the Olympic Committee, but he did stick out his neck for the sake of creating more jobs for Americans. Can any of the Republicans claim that? Does any Republican have the guts and clear headedness to say that Obama is actually behaving like a presiddent should?
So far I see no evidence of this. I see only selfish partisanship, narrow mindedness, and complete disregard for the good of the nation.-

Hold on, Obama has been on the I'm sorry trip for the last 9 months. He's based America for being evil, for using energy, and just about anything else. During his time, he continues to bash America. So why would the committee even consider giving the games to someone who has openly attacked America?
Reply
And no, Obama isn't acting like a president, going to Brussels and doing this is the job of the First Lady or perhaps the VP. Not the President of the United States. He's acting like the campaign is still on. Since he's shown no skills at actually being president, perhaps it's time for his handlers to let him know it's time to actually do the job the American people hired him to do. Or start packing your bags because he's looking more and more like a one term loser.

I always get a laugh when I hear one of the cons use that country before party line. They think they're the only real Americans even though they've contributed nothing but an economic policy that all but made the world just about close up shop and got us into 2 wars we won't win after 19 civilian religious extremists committed a civil crime, albeit of horrendous proportions. When we protested, we were traitors and fellow terrorists. Now 'real' patriots complain about every thing Obama does, walk around with guns on their hips and teabag to protest taxes and think it's some kind of con victory that Chicago didn't get the Olympics. Not too hypocritical, are we, nutjobs? Maybe if your prez had had the sense to not cut taxes when he was doubling the national deficit we wouldn't be in the world of crap we're in now. But just keep rooting against your own country and saying NO to everything. That'll get you back in power real quick. Mensa Cons.

I find it ironic that it's unpatriotic to not want the Olympics, but patriotic to say we've lost the war in Iraq.

When the cons only use half this quote they are the ones who are demoralizing the troops in the field by misrepresenting what the speaker actual stated. That *cough, cough * liberal MSM parrots the same half quote as if it is fact shows where their priorities are.
Reply
Mr. REID. Madam President, the White House has been telling America that Democrats are doing the wrong thing by calling for a change of course in Iraq. They say holding the Iraqi Government accountable is wrong. They say finding a political solution Iraq is wrong. They say redeploying troops out of a civil war is wrong. They have said even debating a strategy for changing course is dangerous, and many Senate Republicans have backed that up by blocking several of our attempts to debate this issue here on the Senate Floor.
[...]
Conditions in Iraq get worse by the day. Now we find ourselves policing another nation's civil war. We are less secure from the many threats to our national security than we were when the war began. As long as we follow the President's path in Iraq, the war is lost. But there is still a chance to change course and we must change course. No one wants us to succeed in the Middle East more than I do. But there must be a change of course. Our brave men and women overseas have passed every test with flying colors. They have earned our pride and our praise. More important, they deserve a strategy worthy of their sacrifice.
Why do the cons want our troops demoralized?

Jessie said it was all Bush's fault! Rush said it was President Obama's fault. The good people of Chicago did'nt know if they wanted it or not! The politicians wanted it so they could redirect untold tax payer funds to more friendly pockets. Local muggers wanted it for all the fresh meat. Just think of all the part time jobs lost! I'm sure somehow we could have credited the stimilus package. We might have been able to call them "Green Jobs". O! What might have been!!!

President Obama should not have flown to Copenhagen with critical decisions to be made about Afghanistan, Healthcare and the economy -- real job loss numbers are in the double digits (because they are not counting people who have just stopped looking or dropped off the rolls because they've used all their unemployment insurance. He is in a hurry to push everything - cap & trade, healthcare, bailouts, cash for clunkers - gotta do it now! - but when it comes to the war and decisions that affect young men and women's lives in the armed services, he hasn't made up up his mind since the August McChrystal report, yet he has time to appear on David Letterman, and fly two separate jumbo jets (what happened to worries about global warming?), with Oprah in tow to lobby for Chicago to get the Olympics. If George Bush had done this for Dallas there would be rioting in the streets and cries of misplaced priorities - and rightly so. It demonstrates President Obama's inexperience and arrogance. There are people in his adminstration who stood to benefit and profit from locating the Olympics in Chicago (Valerie Jerret and David Axelrod for starters) And, Chicago residents would foot the lion's share of the bill. The Olympics have traditioinally lost more money than made money for the host cities, the 2012 Olympics in Vancouver has already put the city in the hole by millions, and they haven't even happened yet. The rest of the Country would help foot the bill as well. Valerie Jerrett had already arranged for federal funds through HUD, which would have funneled muillions of US Taxpayer dollars to foot some of the bill. Is begging for rational thinking when it comes to the Country's priorities and spending is akin to 'America hating'? Can't think of any rational arguments, so we name call (again)? The government has not now or ever run any program more efficiently or with less waste than private industy. The government created the very restrictions which currently hamper the operation of free markets and helped to our 'health care' mess. Just like government intervention ala Fannie & Freddie and giving loans to people who never should have had them, created the banking crash. The people of Chicago recognized what would happen to their city and their taxes - bravo for them.

Rachel is young and green- all 37 years of her........frankly so is Obama......his mistakes during his first 9 months indicate this.....and frankly, the presidency and an anchor position on MSNBC is not a place for on the job training. They are both good people- just not up to the job.

As it relates to this venom being spewed by the left and the right- we Americans need to be better than this and demand better of both sides. I for one, would prefer positive comments with positive suggestions as to how we can extricate ourselves from the mess into which Washington has gotten us. -

Rachael Maddow is right. It is disgusting how the right-wingers howl with glee over the US not getting the 2016 Olympics, they are very Un-American. They cry about Pres. Obama spending a few hours trying to help the USA get the Olympics and say nothing about Pres. Bush going to the Beijing
Reply
Olympics for 4 days. What a pack of asses. They cry Obama has to be here to work on US's problems. Well for all the ring-wing idiots in the room he has done more work in the few months he has been in office then George W. Bush did in 2 years.
Pres. Obama has had to deal with 2 wars. One war (Iraq) being started based on a lie about WMD's that has killed 100 of thousands of Iraqi citizens and thousands of US troop.
The fight should have always been in Afganistan where Al-Quada
was. Pres. Obama has certainly proven that he can multi-task, a feat that escape John MCain who had to suspend his campaign
when the US financial crisis hit.
One of his first act as President was to sign into law the Lilly Leadbetter Act which guarantees equal pay for equal work. I hardly think he has been taking it easy. There is alot of work to do in order to fix the mess Bush Administration got the US into. -

Personally, I am glad we didn't get the bid for the Summer Olympics. It has nothing to do with the issue of Obama all it would have meant for the smaller communities in IL is a major tax hike and believe me we're dealing with enough of those as it is. Let's not get into the issue of where would the money have gone once again to smaller communities NO .. it would have gone right back into the corrupt political machine and believe me it doesn't matter Dem or Rep it's all the same.

You cons are so full of crap! If he WOULDN'T have gone you would be complaining that he DIDN'T GO, and would have said that he doesn't care about our country. You say he should have been here making descision about healthcare when you all want healthcare reform to fail. You say he should be making decisions about Afganistan when we know you want Afganistan to fail too. Who cares if our soldiers die and we lose the war, as long as it makes Obama look bad, right? Look in the mirror and you will see who really hates America!

Really, you think the whole coutntry would have been crying about Obama not 'getting the Olympics?' Who cares about making Obama look bad? ... he does that all by himself - on his apology tours and demonstrating his inexperience in decision making. Truly, most people want him to succeed, but he gets in his own way. He is everyone's President - you don't see Republicans driving around with bumper stickers that say 'Not my President' as you saw with Bush. Do you think they all really wantts him to be dope? The majority of people in ths Country care the the country is going down the tubes, that they are o the road to nationalizing everything under the guise of saving the Country? The partisan poliitics are glaring in appointments and favors to Unions.. The Democrats have a majority in Congress and in the President, and they cannot get things done because of the infighting within the Democrat party and their inabiility to avoid creating payback opportunities for their constibuents and special interests, which they all avowed not to support. The Republicans have fallen guilty to the same issues - they have put party before the people they are supposed to represent. Obama needs to own up to his own issues and stop blaming previoius administrations. That is an argument of convinences when he doesn't have anything of note to show for his first 9 months - he hasn't succeeded at anything he wanted to do.. He blames George Bush and by all rights, Bush did start us down the road to socilaized institutions much to the chagrin and dismay of Republicans and Libs -- but by your logic, we should blame Clinton for 9/11 and everyone of course forgets the Dot.bombs that tanked the high tech sector. 9/11 was an economic disaster that we recovered from though the magnitude of losses were great -- financial and insurance institutions took a hard hard beating - not only losing valuable employees but billioins in assets, not to mention the insurance payouts and lawsuits that came from it - but all the folks responsible for it entered the country when Clinton was in office and the CIA and FBI were forbidden from sharing informaiton - how come he doesn't get the blame, when it happened 9 months into Bush's Presidency? This is Obama's mess and he needs to figure out ratioinal ways to make the economy better and to either end or plan to win the war.. I thought Republicans were the war mongers? Now you're saying they want the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to fail? Can't have it both ways. Also, If you would use a bit of logic, the people you decray as not caring about theri country or trying to stiffle the war efforts are largely the ones who have sons and daughters in the war. I'm sure it's not their inenti to make matters worse so their own children are put in harms way. Think things through.

I saw people cheer when news broke about Abu Ghraib. I was working out in weight/machines/etc room when I saw a dozen people gathered around a TV. I went to see what was drawing the attention and, as that segment of the news came to a close, I literally saw fist pumps, cheers and heard a few "we got 'em now!" utterances.
