The Right Wing Attack on Patriotism - A Look At The Health Effects on REAL Patriots »

Posted By Goppy 1 month, 4 weeks ago in Health & Fitness

"What's goin' on, kid?'' – and quick to laugh. But after losing his U.S. Senate seat to an opponent who ran post-9/11 TV ads that showed the decorated Vietnam vet alongside Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein, Cleland fell into a depression he was afraid he might not pull out of. It was public service, he says, that had given his life shape and meaning after he left three limbs on a battlefield in Khe Sanh.

It's often pointed out that Hitler loved to employ an audacious technique - to lie in such a fantastic manner - that people would be less likely to confront the lie. The theory being ... "Who would make up such a fantastic and completely astounding thing, unless it had some truth to it?"

Such is the callousness of the Modern Republicans ... and their opposition to Health Insurance Reform.

But before there were "Death Panels" ... there was Karl Rove and Saxby Chambliss ... who had the sheer audacity to link a Vietnam Veteran ... a man who lost 3 limbs in combat ... as a TRAITOR to our nation ... and a friend of Osama bin Laden.

Can there be any more proof that Modern Republicanism is built on a foundation of Moral Vacancy?

BTW ... just to be clear ... this story is to let everyone know about Max Cleland's book: "Heart of a Patriot: How I found the Courage to Survive Vietnam, Walter Reed and Karl Rove,"

The Modern Republican's code of conduct has led them to a place where they will DO anything ... SAY anything ... and DESTROY anything ... to fulfill a lust for power ... a greed do dominate ... that is unprecedented in modern America.

They are even willing to destroy American's service to our nation.

They ridiculed Max Cleland's service ... just as they ridiculed John Kerry's military service.

And who are those that ridicule our veterans?

Men such as Dick Cheney ... Karl Rove ... Saxby Chambliss ... men who CHOSE to turn their back on our nation.

So how do they explain their LACK of service?

Simple ... they DEMEAN Veterans who actually served.

Again ... this is yet another example of the stunning Moral Vacancy of the Modern Right ...

I would also say that anyone in Georgia who voted for Saxby Chambliss ... considering his utter shamelessness towards our veterans ... has a lot to answer for.

The right wing's Republican pseudo-patriotism is amazing. It is so abhorrent to the world to be so shameful

An example of a right wing PATRIOT..

Ted Nugent. he gives RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERS A BAD NAME.. he's and A$$HOLE..

An interviewer from the British newspaper The Independent questioned Nugent about a 1977 interview in High Times magazine in which Nugent allegedly detailed elaborate steps taken to avoid the Vietnam draft.[32]

"I got 30 days' notice of the physical," Nugent told them. "I ceased cleansing my body. Two weeks before the test I stopped eating food with nutritional value. A week before, I stopped going to the bathroom. I did it in my pants. My pants got crusted up." [32]

Nugent dismissed the veracity of these statements, saying "You've got to realize that these interviewers would arrive with glazed eyes and I would make stories up." He explained that he did not go to Vietnam because he had a one-year student deferment. When questioned, he admitted that he had "not wanted to get his ass blown off in Vietnam," but made note of a tour he made with the USO in 2004 to Fallujah and Afghanistan as support of his assertion that "I am not a coward." He also said that "Because I failed to serve in Vietnam, I feel an obligation now, to do everything I can to support those defending our freedom. Do I feel guilt and embarrassment? Yes

      FTA:
"You cannot pump troops in with a sanctuary for the bad guys right across the border; that's Vietnam! There will never be enough troops – Alexander the Great and the Russians gave up and went home – and victory does not lie in more boots on the ground,'' but in using our air and intelligence assets to go after bin Laden, al-Qaeda, and the Taliban in Pakistan, and protect Pakistan's nuclear project. "Otherwise, you have Vietnam again, and how did that work out for us? Of course, those guys'' – Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, he means – "never learned from Vietnam because they never went.''

I can't believe the citizens of our country take their cues for "patriotism" from those who never set foot into any war, while at the same time allow these individuals to nullify (or worse, demonize) the life and service of people like Max Cleland. To say of a man like this, who sacrificed to the extent he has, that he is "in league with terrorists" in order to win an election...to me, that is akin to treason. The man is a hero and should be recognized as such. But then, we have never treated our true heroes very well...have we?

That's what a real hero is and what the Republican swiftboaters did to him could never be justified.

Thank all of you that recognize how Mr.Cleland has been done so wrong by these psudo patriots..When i see people like Max Cleland allowed to be slandered the way the republican party did,it makes me question why anyone would go to war for them ? If that is the way they treat someone like him..how do they really feel about me and the rest of the people that served this country ? Why would we want to protect scum like that ?
They deserve nothing bought for them with the blood of real men.

"There, for the first time, he saw women soldiers coming back in the same shape he had. "All I could think was, Oh my god, we're sending women to get blown to hell. . . . Slowly I faced up to the thing that was making my recovery so hard. I had voted to give George Bush the power to start his war. . . . When my turn came to protect another generation of young people from fighting and dying and getting maimed in another unwinnable, unnecessary war, I had blown it.''

There it is in a nut shell !!!!

The difference between a combat vet and a chicken hawk with tail feathers in his eyes.

Mr. Cleland knew what hell was and he still made a mistake.
GW Bush knew what running away was, and tried to recoup his manhood by destroying others around the world.

Mr. Cleland I salute your honesty and your bravery !!!

You freakin' scum bag cowards who sought shelter from serving. I ask you to show a real love of America and become responsible citizens. Stop the insanity and support our returning vets with the care and respect we have earned.

Stop the lies about your patriotism, no buys it anyway, at least none that matter !!!! Hahahahahahahahaaaa !!!!!!!

Plant your as* in a hot LZ and see the hell close up and personal or shut the hell up and crawl back in your womb.

"You cannot pump troops in with a sanctuary for the bad guys right across the border; that's Vietnam!"

Sounds to me like Max is calling for taking the fight into Pakistan in a big way... perhaps even take-over... "and protect Pakistan's nuclear project."

No Max, you did not blow it. You were right with your vote in 2002. You, along with all who cast "aye", saved millions of lives with that vote. Of course, no one can prove that to 100% certainty. So the logic and reason it takes to arrive at that conclusion can and will be roundly and widely excoriated. But, rest assured it was not the disaster that the political culture of the left so desperately seeks to imbue in the national psyche.

Excellent article from a true patriot.

I know that the word "patriot" has become a demonization of sorts as it points out those whom claim loyalty to America yet seem to do the opposite in her name. But, there are still some "true" patriots out there that deserve recognition.

The constant reminder of what the party of obstructionists, liars, and money worshipers will stoop to is always worth reexamining.

Wow. Someone in the administration needs to talk to Max Cleland about his insights on the Afghanistan/Vietnam comparisons. I think that his insight would be invaluable here.

I'm glad to see that this true patriot is doing well. Now if only the ones that did him wrong would get their just deserts.
