I wonder why Glenn Beck doesn't have any outrage for the way Modern Republicans demean America's veterans ... actual patriots ...
Reply
Saxby Chambliss is ... in my opinion ... the most despicable Senator ...
I commiserate with Max Cleland ... I was physically sickened by Saxby Chambliss' 2002 Senate campaign.
I was sure that Georgians would reject him soundly for daring to shove an actual patriot into the mud and stomp on them.
After all, Max Cleland is a coward who REFUSED to serve his nation ... claiming he had a 'sore knee'.
But the tactics of Chambliss worked ... Georgians fell for it ... ...
... ... woe to a nation in which the electorate chooses stupidity.

Then it'd have served Chambliss and his party well to campaign against Cleland based on those objections, rather than to run a smear campaign against him.
Reply
The fact that Chambliss did not run on issues, but rather had Rove and his team make up lies about his opponent speaks volumes about his integrity--a quality most would concur is essential to a good legislator.
Don't you agree, tanglang?-

But it's difficult for me to imagine that juxtaposing a photo of Max Cleland with the most hated man in America ... Osama bin Laden ... and saying that Max Cleland is a friend of Osama ...
... is ANYTHING but the most morally vacant attack on a veteran's patriotism.
Especially coming from Saxby Chambliss ... a man who never donned a uniform ... because ... as he said ... he had a 'sore knee'.

So questioning a decorated vet's judgment is an acceptable campaign ploy? tanglang says Cleland lost because of his lack of principles.
Reply
What principles and judgment are demonstrated by someone who runs for office by comparing someone who lost three limbs in a war to Public Enemy No. 1?
Why not stick to legitimate issues rather than make revolting smears against the opponent?

I wasn't there and haven't studied that campaign closely, so I suppose it's possible he did. But the fact that the Republican machine would even run such a disgusting smear campaign on a decorated vet who'd lost three limbs fighting for his country is what bothers me so much. As Goppy says, here's a perfect example of exactly how bereft of rational discourse and civility today's Republican party is when it comes to fighting for power--anything is acceptable to them, no matter how unethical, immoral and just plain evil, as long as it serves their purposes.

Here's the ad, approved by candidate Obama, which clearly says that John McCain is stuck in the 80's.
Reply

It says that he can not operate a computer or send e-mails. It failed to mention that he can not do these things because he has crippled fingers due to torture in Vietnam.-

If it failed to mention that he can't do those things because of war injuries, then it's definitely not making fun of his war injuries.
Reply
Besides, there are applicatinos that allow people with restricted mobility to operate them and send e-mails. -

I don't think so, libs. He can use a keyboard, and I think you know that. No one was making fun of his being crippled. He didn't know HOW, and that was the point. And I do recall McCain stating he didn't know much about the economy. So realistically please, what is wrong with what that ad said....really.

The Boston Globe reported about it in the year 2000:
Reply
http://graphics.boston.com/news/politics/campaign2...
The article says that: "McCain's severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes."
This was written about years before the ad was made.-

The man can tap a keyboard with his nuckle libs. He can get a voice activated keyboard. He didn't know how to use the net because he wasn't interested libs. It had nothing to do with his hands. The ad was right. It was just one indication how out of touch he was. Stop trying to make this about some imagined slight. You're playing games, and you're doing it deliberately. Shame on you.

Uh huh. You hear nothing but what you want to hear. He wasn't interested in the net libs. Not in exploring it, or being involved with it. Does his wife talk for him too, libs? I guess you missed it. They have voice activated keyboards. He wasn't interested in it libs. The ad was correct. McCain was not engaged with new technology. He knew little about the economy. He admitted it.

Even Joe Biden admitted the ad about McCain was terrible. Now McCain apparently twitters "with help" as reported by CNN. I would assume the "with help" means that he has someone else do the typing to save himself the pain. And I take your answer to mean that you did not watch the other ad.

The ad that this story links to DID run on issues. It first talked about the fact that we are facing war and showed who we were at war with or being threatened by. (Would you prefer the ad to say "We're facing war" while showing kids playing with bunny rabbits?)
Reply
The ad then talks about claims Cleland had made. Hence the picture of Cleland. (Not next to OBL or Saddam but by itself in a new screen while the audio talked about how he voted)
The only one lying here is the author of the article and Max.-

You know exactly what ads were run against Cleland. And here's what you said above:
Reply
"And let me remind you, I protested Saxby outside his office at Cobb Galleria Center."
Why did you protest if you think his tactics were above board? Was it for some unrelated reason? (If so, why did you even bring it up?)-

Tang, that's bull$hit and you know it! no where in the add does anyone mention war wounds. He is referring to the fact that McCain is not computer friendly due to his never having learned the functions of the damn thing!

The author of the article is Max ... Max Cleland.
Reply
He wrote a book about his experience in the campaign.
But ... of course ... everyone that doesn't share your FOX-inspired take on things is a liar.
Hey ... did you know that Rupert Murdoch is not even an American?
No wonder he hires people to disparage our veterans.
The REAL wonder is ... why do people like you support people like Rupert ... in disparaging veterans?

The real wonder is why come every time some liberal has a book to sell and makes accusations they can't prove you guys jump all over their opinions like it's the God's honest.

And Melinda Hennebeger is the author of the article. Unless of course Cleland interviewed himself and typed it up in the 3rd person...-

As to your wonder ... Propeller is a great place to inform citizens about newly released books.
After all, most Propeller people are interested in politics - and this is a politically interesting story.
Would you rather that I announce some other book?
Say ... Matthew Lattimer's book "SPEECH-LESS"

It is his opinion. The ads he cried about did not try to link him to Osama and were not any worse than his ads.

What I am saying is, his book is only half the story yet yall hold it up as the Gods honest truth. Just like all the others.

Tang is not refuteing his military service, but merely his ability as a senator. What this article does not mention is that he barely won that seat (winning it by 30,000 votes) in 1996. When he lost this, he was only going for a second term, it's not like he had this position for a couple of decades then got bumped because of some negative ads. This article is very misleading.

It's a book.
Reply
A book written by Max Cleland ... describing the effect of a non-veteran ... and machiavellian political strategist, Karl Rove ... associating him with Osama bin Laden and calling him a traitor.
If Max Cleland was such a bad Senator ... why didn't Saxby Chambliss attack his record?
The fact is ... Max Cleland was an effective Senator, well liked ... and Saxby Chambliss needed to throw as much DIRT as he could to win the election.
Because, as you and I both know ... in Georgia ... like South Carolina ... voters respond to dirt.

It's a book written by Cleland, with Ben Raines, but it is not entirely about the election that he lost his senate seat in like you are trying to make it out to be. It is more about his dealing with PTSD. Sure, he mentions that election because the loss brought about long hidden symptoms of his condition. Here is a link that briefly describes the book, read the foreword towards the lower part of the page. No where does he mention the election in this foreword.

You do also realize that Chambliss was just up for re-election. It ended in a runoff, and Chambliss won that, even though people who share your train of thought and some of the grass roots organizations who helped elect Obama were against him and rallied very hard to unseat him, Chambliss won with 57% of the vote. He ran against Jim Martin, who is a respectable politician in his own right. Kinda makes you think that if a major organization, one that could elect a president lets say, and an accomplished politician such as Martin (who is also a vet) can not unseat Chambliss, maybe Cleland was just beat, plain and simple.

"As a journalist".....So,whats the problem with that..NVA and VC bullets didn't care what your role was..they killed equally..I get real sick of non servers talking about something they know nothing about...There were no front lines, there wasn't an easy way to identify your enemy (unless he was shooting at you ) and every frigg'n person from the most insulated office remf to the guys in the boonies was equally important and should be given the respect they deserve..Especially by those that haven't served or were to cowardly to man up and go..But instead used daddy's influence and money,or five deferments or a pimple on their azz to not go...
