Bible Too Liberal? Conservatives Say Yes »
Posted By Radiofreeeuropa 2 months, 3 weeks ago in ReligionFew have accused the Lord of being too liberal, but that isn't stopping a group of conservatives from creating a censored version of the Bible, which they claim is too liberal.

I thought this was a satire when I first heard about it.

No way!
Way...
The message of the New Testament, is not a political one.
But many lines attributed to Jesus are hard to interpret as an endorsement of conservatism. Yet according to their website ""liberal bias has become the single biggest distortion in modern Bible translations." They want to "replace liberal words like 'labor'" with terms conservatives like better, and "explain the numerous economic parables with their full free-market meaning"
—this takes crazy to a whole new level hitherto unimagined.
Paul Zummo wrote in Southern Appeal. "it's the Left that is trying to recruit Jesus Christ to their cause, hoping to sell their positions on economic issues with their portrayal of "Jesus Christ, socialist superstar." But it's all a smokescreen, because they know they've run afoul of Church teachings on matters such as abortion, euthanasia, and gay marriage."
Hmm... Last I checked there is not a word in the New Testament, let alone attributed to Jesus about homosexuals, euthanasia, or abortion. (Nor are "liberals" particularly "for" these things. Rather they feel government intrusion into very personal matters is wrong.)
These loons plan to fix that I guess.
Even in the Old Testament, remarkably no value is assigned life under a month old.-"And if it be from a month old even unto five years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male five shekels of silver, and for the female thy estimation shall be three shekels of silver. -- Leviticus 27:6
In the Old Testament, God sometimes approves of killing fetuses. "And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive? ... Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. -- Numbers 31:15-17
(Some of the non-virgin women must have been pregnant. They would have been killed along with their unborn fetuses.)
"Give them, O LORD: what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts." -- Hosea 9:14
"Yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay even the beloved fruit of their womb." -- Hosea 9:16
"Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up." -- Hosea 13:16
Wow! That is horrid. Way worse than liberals saying it's not our place to force our opinions regarding these matters on people we don't even know. But that isn't what the article is about, I apologize for sidetracking.
It's about some guys who want to rewrite the New Testament and make Jesus a gun nut who hates people he doesn't agree with.
Instead of chasing the money changers fro the temple he will now join them. Instead of healing the sick and feeding the hungry, he now will be performing miracle plastic surgery on the rich and feeding the poor...to sharks.-

Portions of your comment above reveal a lack of knowledge about what the Christian Bible actually says.......
Homosexuality IS addressed in the New Testament:
Read Romans chapter 1, especially verses 26 and 27.
Read First Corinthians chapter 6, verse 9.
Jesus is not quoted in the Bible on the subject of homosexual behavior, perhaps because that was a NON-ISSUE in the area and time he lived on the earth.
The Apostle Paul wrote on homosexuality in several of his letters because in the Greco-Roman world in which he lived, that was an issue which was known to some extent by his readers.
The Bible IS mute on the topic of which Computer operating system is best, what caliber of hunting rifle is preferable for elk hunting, and which television Network has the most "evil programming."
There is evidence that the Old Testament prophet Exekiel may have written about aircraft.........
The principle here: Not all Biblical authors wrote about all issues. The Christian Bible, as a whole, contains various general teachings about many topics common to human existence across many epochs and cultural settings. It also contains specific references to specific issues and situations confronted by its readers. But, for the Bible to address every issue of every time in every culture in specificity would mean that it would take perhaps 4 semi-trucks to haul just one Bible's text!!!!
But here's the bottom line from me to you:
I give you a "pass" on your lack of knowledge of the Christian Bible, because you are not interested in studying or knowing the Bible in a personal, in-depth manner, because you do not have interest in using the Bible as a basis for your life. You are only interested in the Bible if it can be used as an object of ridicule, if it enables you to besmirch the perceptions of your perceived "enemies," or if you can incite responses that enhance your own values or agendas.
SO, stir on, rfe! Just be aware you really DO NOT KNOW what's on the bottom of the kettle.......

I guess there is a point here. How can a God fearing con read these bible verses and still support trickle down economics?

What does the Bible says about rich people?
They are going to the guy with the pitchfork!
"There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented." -- Luke 16:19-25
"Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God". -- Matthew 19:23-24, Mark 10:23-25
"But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation." -- Luke 6:24
"Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you." -- James 5:1
An argument for "lazy fairy" markets, derivatives, Ponzi Scheme "instruments", managers being paid 1000 times more than workers? I think not. -

These righties subvert government, religion and social morality to conform to their extreme ideology, so this is not a surprise. Next up on their agenda is probably our Constitution which they've already subverted but haven't yet changed the language. And I'm also not surprised it's Phyllis Schlafly's son who' started the Conservative Bible Project and Conservapedia because of liberal bias which he is replacing with conservative bias. For all his schooling, he still hasn't learned anything about hypocrisy.

You've probably heard through the biased liberal media that Jesus said while he was dying on the cross: "Forgive them father, for they no not what they do." Well that is a liberal falsehood! (He actually said, "You're all going to fry forever in Hell for this.") The liberals just added that verse to make Jesus look like a hippie.

The Sermon on the Mount of course must be deleted as it is simply irresponsible. All that stuff about the meek inheriting the earth could do irreparable damage to the defense budget!

All this brings back to mind when the "Christian Coalition" still existed. They used to send me appeal letters (for money, of course). The thing that struck me is that not once in any of their letters did they quote any Scripture to support their positions. I like to think that that is what helped cause their demise.

Frankly, I don't know how any Bible-reading evangelical Christian would NOT be a progressive. The word "evangelical," sadly, has been corrupted by the "Christian" right. If conservatives want to see an end to abortion and gay marriage -- and if liberals want to see an end to poverty and war -- politics and politicians, programs and policies, laws and Constitutional amendments, picketing abortion clinics and marching against wars won't make it happen. Change must come from within. Indeed, "if any one be in Christ, there is a new creation; the old things have passed away; behold all things have become new." (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Jesus Himself was a revolutionary. Campus Crusade for Christ, an organization that no one would think as liberal, likes to call people to "Come, join the revolution." In some versions of the Bible, His disciples are said to "have turned the world upside down." Pretty radical.-

100 percent agreed on the radical message of the Bible, bn1!

Further, I would say that the radical message Christian Bible (partially described in your comment) of God's love, power and provision for each human being, cuts across political and cultural lines (most of which are drawn by people insecure in their own standing).
The Bible addresses the importance of change of peoples' hearts, and does not endorse any one political system. Rather than being interested in external things, God is interested in relationship with each person and the condition of their hearts. That's because God knows that if a person is guided by a "changed/new" heart, the external things will work themselves out.
I Samuel 16:7 says, "The Lord does not look at things that man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."

the bible has always supported the liberal ways. Both the Old and New Testaments demonstrate this. in any, many passages. You cannot be a modern conservative and follow the Bible.

In short, the right wing neocons are hypocrites going against the teachings of their own religions. They go to their houses of worship (I included houses of worship to include all religions) for what purpose. I have no idea. They certainly have no belief in it.-

On defense: Jesus said "Love your enemies" and "Blessed are the peacemakers." "If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also." (Matthew 5:44; 5:9; 5:39.)

Change that to bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran.
On social programs: "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven." (Matthew 19:21.)
Change that to "let 'em eat wafer".
On rugged individualism and the pursuit of self-interest: "Love your neighbor as yourself." "So in everything, do to others as you would have them do to you." (Matthew 22:39; 7:12.)
Change that to "F 'em"
On financial success: "Truly, I say unto you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven." "You cannot serve both God and Money." (Matthew 19:23; 6:24.)
Change that to "those who have the shekels for the toll get into heaven, the rest o' yous bums burn up while Nixon pokes you with a pitchfork.."

Well, blame that one on Constantine and the fathers of the Church. They were weeding out books that were not supporting their views of Christ. They took a dim view of those books that supported Arianism, and of books that sounded good but were not in tune with their views of the Christian faith.

Yes...let us rewrite or edit anything that has true meaning to fit the spiraling lunacy of the Christian conservative.

They claim the Constitution is a Christian document, yet want to destroy it because it allows different races and religions to coexist side-by-side. Now, they want to destroy the true message of the Bible for many of the same reasonings.
Christian conservatives are unable to practice "tolerance" and/or "love thy neighbor as thy self." Those items need to be taken out of the Bible!
Wouldn't it be easier to just revert back to Judaism or become a zealous Muslim and only follow the hard line of the first 5 books of the OT or the Koran? I mean, today's Christian conservatives really are saying they don't believe in the message of Jesus. Yeah...I said it!-

Amen !!!!!
Very well said.
They are forgetting the most important Commandment. To Love GOD more than anything else.
Then to Love your Neighbor as you Love yourself !!!!
For if you do those things you will not have time for hatred, jealousy, envy, greed, pride, slothfulness...
You will be so busy working to make life better for all, that you won't realize how little you might have, because you will be full of the Love that is God.

I honestly can't wait to hear what my conservative neighbors here in the middle of the Bible Belt have to say about this. Which side will they choose? To most, siding against their conservative Gods is as sacrilegious as mocking or questioning the Bible...but here, they'll have to choose which "God" they worship more...the one from the Bible, or the one with a "-R" after his political title.

Well then the books written by Paul will stay, any of the Psalms and Proverbs talking about taking care of your neighbor, love, widow, orphan, etc will have to go; Oh and there goes most of Genesis...you know taking care of all living things on land and in air and in sea cause that would mean Global Warming; there are others.
But here's the kicker...wonder if anything Jesus said or modeled will be left. You know the b attitudes, taking care of the sick/lame, widowed/er, orphaned, father/motherless, homeless.
Wonder if the parable he told regarding a. the Good Samaritan and b. the Rich man will make the cut. -

Editing the bible and rewriting it has been going on for hundreds and hundreds of years. I prefer the "Aramaic" bible because it is closer to the actual language of Jesus and more words have a different meaning then the King James and other newer versions. In some cases the sentences or phrases have entirely different meanings.

That´s hard to believe! Does Schlafly want to be more Christian than God himself? The Bible is the most read and most translated book in the world. Every translation is a kind of interpretation, that much is true, but as a Christian, Schafly would have to accept that every preaching is an actualisation of the Holy Scripture. It is self-evident that as human society has changed throughout the last 2000 years, the words of the Bible can´t always be taken literally. We all are brain-owners, aren´t we?

The last time I checked, evangelical, fundamentalist Christians - which is how I think most politically social conservatives would describe themselves - subscribed to the idea that the Bible is the inerrent Word of God. If they believe that, why should they want to change a single word in it? They're bigger hypocrits than I thought they were.
