Regular watering only really matters during the crucial fruit growing stages while the fruit itself is growing and swelling. While water is being applied regularly the skin remains elastic and able to stretch with the growth of fruit. If during this time you cease to water the plants, the skin hardens. Then when you begin to re-water some days later for example, the fruit tries to swell, but the skin has now lost its elasticity and things have only one way to go.- THE FRUIT SPLITS.
