Honestly, I think what makes him deserving is the fact that he took our world image, which had become one of a hateful and war mongering empire, and flipped it overnight. His promise of hope - not only to us, but to the world - resonated like none I have ever seen. The moment he was announced the winner, they showed dancing in the streets of countries I had never even heard of. The entire world was watching. When has that ever happened before? When did the world at large really care who the American President was?

In the blink of an eye, our world image went from loathsome to admirable, and we went from being feared to being envied. We proved that the American spirit wasn't killed under George W. Bush after all. And overnight, America reclaimed leadership of the world stage by embracing diplomacy over tyranny.
While it's true that his plans have yet to bear fruit, it is not true to say that he's accomplished nothing (as many are saying now) to deserve this honor. On the contrary, he saved our country's image and brought the world back to place where negotiations take precedence over force and intimidation. Now he has the rest of his time in office to deliver the rest. And I do hope this influences his yet to be determined strategy in Afghanistan.

Efforts to strengthen what????? The nomination papers were submitted less than 10 days after he took office. This is a huge political pile of pooh. When the Noble prizes were conceived they served a good purpose. Today it's little more than a propaganda wing for the ultra left. Noble is now a full fledged joke.

Because the nominations had to be submitted by Feb, 2009, maybe the committee gave obie the prize because they are racists.

Maybe they feel that obie has achieved more than any other black man could have, and therefore deserves the prize, kinda like "grading on a curve". If any other president had done so much, (or so little) and won a Nobel prize for it, there would be riots in the streets, claiming "the fix is in".
Obie won this for the same reason he won the election, it is politically correct to give it to a black man. There were several other leaders from several other nations who, over many years have done far more to bring about peace, yet, they were passed over.
This was nothing more than a group of people saying," It is PC to give it to obie" -

I think it's a very said commentary on America when we see conservatives first CHEER at an international loss (Olympic bid) and then a week later grow furious over an international win (Nobel prize awarded to our leader).

I thought that the republican party was supposed to be the party that was all about patriotism and country pride, etc. What happened to that when you all lost the White House? Are you now willing to admit that your patriotism is conditional on winning? That if you lose, then there is nothing to be patriotic about?
Bottom line is that he won. It wasn't YOUR decision who won. It wasn't MINE either. It was the committee who nominated and eventually chose him for this honor. Yet all that the conservatives can seem to muster is outrage over it. You really need to ask yourselves why you are like this. Why do you feel the need to celebrate an American loss and vilify an American win the way you are? Why can't you just be proud that our leader is well liked and respected abroad? I realize this revelation goes against your own rhetoric that he's "hurt our image abroad" but why would you want YOUR rhetoric in this case to be true? Is being right more important than an American win to you now?
I'm not going to defend his win because I don't think that is really the point of the lesson we are all learning as we watch the republican meltdown over this issue. Whether he should have won or not is really beside the point that republicans have now PROVEN that they want America to fail, just so that THEY can win.
That's sick. And you all should be ashamed for feeling this way. -
