The question is not why did Apple do this, but rather, what took them so long? The latest iPhone 3GS's being shipped have a new Bootrom that fixes a vulnerability that was used to jailbreak the device, called “ 24kPwn." This vulnerability was used to jailbreak iPhones for the past seven months.
