This accusations would fit in with my opinion of the Italian government, espescially of Silvio Berlusconi."Paying off" members of the Taliban means not only giving in, but ignoring the seriousness of terrorism. These aren´t some members of a street gang and this isn´t the Mafia. These are people, who are willing to give their lives to take those of others. Nothing is more dangerous than someone, who has nothing to lose. What if every nation having troops down there would act like this? Those with the biggest purses will survive?

I think that is only a bad 'politically correct' way to think.
I know as many other Countries pays taliban or other insurgents ( has the same journalist of Times said in an interview I pubblish in my Italian Culture Blog) to defense them boys.
In Afghanistan the political situation isn't all blank or black as some government ( see W. Bush) wanted to tell to us.
In Afghanistan the war continues from some centuries and peoples knows to fight and sometimes they called themself 'taliban', other tiems called themself 'partigians', but the truth that is the only Afghanistan democratic peoples can resolve the problem of fondamentalism in Afghanistan, as in the Pakistan.
Our Countries can only help them.
If We helped Gen. Massud 15 years ago, and not only after 911 now Taliban doesn't exists more!! That' s the truth, but just to 7-8 years ago Taliban was allies to Usa goverment , we forget it?
PS: scuse for my elementary english language.
