i have a personal history with these two gentlemen. carl sagan was an individual who really parked my interests in mathematics and cosmology, back when i was a wee tadpole. prof. hawking was the chairman of my dissertation committee at cambridge. -

My love affair started with Star Wars, Close Encounters and looking up at the night sky on my grandparents farm in the country.
I saw 2001 A Space Odyssey for the first time a couple weeks ago in it's entirety. I'm the same age as that movie. Sigh. Anyway I've seen bits, just of the computer, before. CREEPY AS HECK movie. HOLY COW! IT was truly ahead of it's time. I kept looking at my friend, she had to watch for a class (pick out the Freudian/myth themes.) and both would look at each in shock. Video phone calls, video conferencing, computers on table top, etc.
IF your computer starts talking about feelings....God help you. Don't call me. I'm gone. One area this Avenger friend won't go. Nope. -

We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces.

Sagan's wonderful novel 'Contact' was about a scientist

who spent years looking for a message from aliens;
- but avoided talking with humans.
She realized, after making contact with a
super-wise alien civilization,
that she should have called her Mom more often.
All of you stop talking to strangers on the
internet and go talk to real people.
