"Holtzinger disagrees and dismissed the roughly two dozen complaints the NAACP received as part of an "attempt to get publicity" for the organization and to "justify" its existence. The display won't be taken down any sooner than scheduled, he said."

I wonder if those who would call this mayor insensitive, a racist, and worse, are the same people who call a crucifix in a jar of urine "art"?
Different things offend different types of people. Perhaps we would all be better off taking a deep breath before we rush to become offended. -

If I recall my history. Just about every race has had people hung from trees.

If you look hard enough to be insulted by what you see (even if it's a faceless dummy) you will indeed be insulted.
Now if there is any way to prove these dummies were depicted as African, I'd say take them down and give a public apology.-

These lefty organizations really need to get a life. If they can't do that, the very least they could do for humanity is to quit carping about other people. How in the h--- does the NAACP see hanging as racist? Talk about self-centered!!

Take a good look at the pic of the dummy - it has a white head & blue pants with a darker blue stripe - very reminiscent of A west Point cadet - but if someone pointed that out to this disingenuous

I see stuffed, bloated dummies warming plush chairs throughout both chambers of the Senate and the House of Representatives, and I don't automatically see them as being ethical or honest human beings. It's up to personal interpretation. People see what they want to see. So what?

I wished that the NAACP (which is a racist organization, by the way since we can't have NAAWP ... and ... can't understand why they won't rename it since it does stand for "colored people" (or people "with color" since White is not a color (so they think))) would just go back to Africa. All they want to do is whine about something. If these "people" aren't whining about something, people won't notice "them" (unless you're in a estaurant where they're complaining about not getting waitd on or their food is horrible or no ice in their drink (when it has melted)). Or go on the subways and buses and watch them with their screaming and talking loud. It's horrendous.

The NAACP passes itself off as representing "African-Americans" when the fact is that they try to reprsent black Americans. Many Americans of African descent are not black, but are white or mixed race or Asian. Then there is the fact that many blacks originated from pre-modern humans of Europe, Asia and the Pacific Island areas. Just because an American is black does not mean he is an African-American. Americans of Egyptian, Libyan, etc. descent are usually white, yet they are ignored as African-Americans, even though Egypt and Libya are African nations. Using Afri-Amer also ignores the black Americans who have S. Pacific Aboriginal, New Guinea, etc. anscestry. Pres. Obama is a true Afric-Amer because one of his parents is an American citizen and the other is Kenyan (an African nation). His children, however, are not because both of their parents are natural born American citizens. His wife also is not Afric-Amer because she was born in the USA to US citizens.

Egypt and Libya as 'african' nations??? Sure, in the very political sense of the matter. But really, look at the people who have ruled these countries, and their elites. VERY un-african, at least for the great bulk of the last 3000 years.
Reply
By the way, we don't classify people by political place of birth, but by genetics, using haplotypes and mtDNA. In all reality, Michelle Obama is in fact an African-descended person who lives in the US. Barack Obama, on the other hand, is the first half-white president. -

To 'earthlingerer': The northern third of Africa consists of nations that are primarily non-black. What does, "un-african" mean when speaking of the mostly black African nations? Actually research these nations and you will see such a mish mash of differing politics, history, religions, tribal beliefs, etc. that you could not come up with a true African sense of the matter.
Reply
When did anyone do these DNA tests on Michelle Obama? I do not believe they have been done or it would have been in the news. Take any person in the world and do extensive DNA tests and you will find that every person in the world is related to every other person in the world and that they all have an African background, even if that background is hundreds of thousands of years ago. Science is in firm agreement that Africa is the cradle of the human species. However, there is no agreement on whether or not the original humans were black, white, yellow, red, brown or whatever shade of skin.
Tens of thousands of US citizens who are black have anscestry of S. Pacific Islands, the Guineas, and the Australian Aboriginal background. Calling these individuals African-American is insulting their ancestry - just as not calling a Libyan born USA citizen who is not black an African-American while you call his partner, a black American who is 6th generation native born US citizen, an African-American.
Michelle Obama & the Obama children are not Afri-Amer, they are Americans OR, if you insist on bringing skin color into it, black Americans. Sorry earthlingerer, you must really research the subject before you comment - - that is, if you wish to sound (read) intelligently.

I could understand if this display was on private property, but it on public property and is suppose to represent the views of all the people. Sure the Mayor is not a bigot, That's why I have a horror scene in my front yard of a priest raping a 3 year old boy.

Now this is VERY confusing. Every other report I read about this incident has the display being removed after protest, NOT that the mayor was refusing to remove it. In fact, here is a FOX News story, same picture, same layout as the article posted here, stating that the display was "removed" after protest:

So which is true? I am kind of used to seeing FOX News report differently than all the other media, but when they start contradicting themselves, that's just too much.
Now, despite the confusion here, I am actually on the Mayor's side (if, in fact, that is an accurate story). I think Halloween is the one day where political correctness needs to take a backseat to fun. I would see the NAACP's point if the bodies being hung were "black" or if they were surrounded by white men with torches or wearing sheets of if there was some cross burning nearby. But just having bodies hanging from the trees is innocent enough on Halloween. It's a scene depicted many places and I've never equated it to a "lynching" or even to a "black" person being murdered. And these dummies had no real faces (some use masks, but these were just stuffed material) and the material used for them was WHITE. So, unless there have been a rash of white lynchings going on, then I don't get where this connection even came from. Honestly, everyone who is so easily offended need to get a grip. It's Halloween for God's sake! By the time we get done making sure we don't offend anyone, the holiday won't resemble the day it has been for over 3000 years.......a day where living and dead mingle, and people disguising themselves as the dead for safety from them. Yes, it's become a day of trick-or-treating, etc, but the origins remain and the costumes, haunted houses, and deadly displays have relevance. Everyone these days is just too concerned about what everyone else is doing and most need to focus on themselves. Enough already. -
