As security worsens in Afghanistan and Pakistan, it is clear that al-Qaeda and its Taliban allies outwitted President George W. Bush and his neoconservative advisers by tying down U.S. forces in Iraq for five years while the Islamic militants rebuilt their forces for the war on their “central front.”

    This article falls into a common error - mistaking US propaganda as fact with reference to the reasons for US military invasion/occupation.

    Doesn't matter if the Taliban had a "respite." We're not there to liberate Afghanistan from the Taliban. Hell, the US arguably CREATED the Taliban by the same actions that created Al Qaeda. The US didn't occupy Afghanistan to promote equal rights for women, or to fight the war on drugs.

    This is about oil, and access to oil, and about putting the vise grips on Iran. It was the case under Bush, and it is the case under Obama. Those who oppose oppressing third world peoples in order to take their natural resources should have a clear message for Obama on Afghanistan - STFU and get the hell out!
