Dr. James Dobson has had considerable sway over a number of families, despite his anti-gay rhetoric. He firmly believes in family values, but the last I checked, hate is not a family value. That said, he is so adamantly against gay marriage that his group was quite potent in keeping down our families and disrespecting their value. Not sure if he has a clear understanding of the word.

I think a lot of Dobson's behavior in FOTF was based in his personality traits, his own brainwashing, and power-seeking. Certain personalities are more likely to cling to positions and opinions and not change them when new data are presented. And certain personalities focus on empire building and power.

People are malleable and easily brainwashed in early childhood and any time trauma or situations evoking strong emotions occur. Trauma comes in many forms: violence or the threat of violence, catastrophic events, or extreme social pressure, for example.
And those seeking to brainwash know how to use trauma to take control of people. The question is, does he believe what he preaches himself, or is he preaching it because he thinks it will help people, or is it all about empire-building?
It's easy to reach people in crisis, which is how many religions spread. They go to the sick, the imprisoned, the hungry, and provide comfort and resources and a strong dose of indoctrination.
This is one reason I'm so strongly opposed to "faith-based" funding. It allows those who would indoctrinate access to people in a weakened mental state who are more easily brainwashed.
It's difficult to break the cycle of ignorance perpetrated by religious extremists. Those inside don't have a clue about the dark side of systematically clinging to folklore for themselves or those who are negatively affected by the indoctrination.
There is something about human nature that seems attracted to the horrible, the magical, the darkness. People seem to thrive on the excitement of negatively judging others and whipping that negativity up into a maelstrom. Whether it's gender, sexual orientation, religion, or something else, people seem drawn to attack the other and dig in and protect the self, irrespective of whether it's rational. -

You'd have to see FOTF to believe it. I got a tour from my counterpart who dealt with radio commercials. Dobson happened to be there taping something and I thought she was going to genuflect in front of the door!
