Conservative Loses in NY-23 Stunner, Despite Palin and Pawlenty Support -- Politics Daily »

The Republicans got the press, but the Democrat got the votes in the special election in New York's 23rd Congressional District.

On an otherwise dismal night for his party, Democrat Bill Owens captured 49 percent of the vote. Conservative Doug Hoffman won 45 percent of the vote, while Republican Dede Scozzafava picked up a crucial five percent, even after dropping out of the race.

Owens, an Air Force retiree and lawyer, will become the first Democrat in more than 100 years to hold the seat, leaving the New York congressional delegation with just two Republicans in its ranks.

You know, a lot is being made of the Republican wins in Va and NJ as being "blows" to Obama, but honestly I think this is the more important race to gauge the pulse of the American electorate.

The reason I say this is because Va ALWAYS votes opposite the White House for their top leaders. If a Democrat is in the White House, they vote in a Republican governor, etc, and the same is true in reverse - a Republican president means a Democrat governor, etc.

And Corzine was a disaster in NJ. He was going to lose regardless of his campaign. Frankly, I think Obama did have a positive impact because he didn't lose by such a great margin as expected by many.

However, this tiny race in NY, who has never gone blue before, voting for the Democrat over the Palin backed Republican is the one that sends a message. Not that Republicans are out, but that the PALIN-esque Republicans are. A county that never before voted Democrat did so this time because the REASONABLE Republican was "run out of town" in favor of a radical teabagger type Republican. And as much as they want everyone to believe it, or as much as they want to believe it themselves, they aren't representative of the majority of conservative voters in America.

THIS is the election that sent the message....not to Obama, but to those who have been hijacking the Republican party, that the majority of voters do not support their hateful agenda.

There may just be some hope for the GOP yet...

This is indeed a big defeat for the right wing element of the Republican Party. Many pundits felt that after Scozzafava - the moderate Republican in the race withdrew, the Conservative candidate backed by the likes of Sarah Palin, Tim Pawlenty, Rush Limbaugh and the political unit at Fox News would go on for a easy win...it did not happen.

The Civil War going on within the Republican Party cost the Party this congressional seat. Bill Owens becomes the first Democrat to hold it in over 100 years. Amazing.

It was a defeat, but it could have very easily gone to the conservatives. It was a very close race.

Even as he conceded defeat Tuesday, Hoffman said on his Web site, "I believe we have sent a powerful message and laid the groundwork for future conservative campaigns."

Either way, the message has been sent from the base of the GOP. Lets nominate conservatives, and not right leaning democrats.

      Bravo.

Hard to know what to make of all of this. NJ especially was a shocker. What I think I saw:

Prez O campaigned heavily in NJ.
Rush, Ms. Palin, and the self-styled "spokesmen" for the Repubs were loudly in NY-23.
Prez O's loudly supported candidate lost.
The candidate for the loud self-styled Repub spokesmen lost in NY-23.

It would appear that none of these guys have near the influence they're given credit (by themselves alone?) for. Yeah, each of these races had other factors. But we are allowed to have opinions, I guess.

I really wasn't sorry that the Rush/Palin candidate lost in NY-23. Not out of any particular regard for Ms. Scozzafava or the Dem candidate -- don't really know the records of these guys; and I don't live there--never have. But there are those of us out here who choose to approach things with rationality and reasoned thought. And the noise eminating from Rush and Sarah, both of whom tend to eschew this kind of stuff, is pretty distracting.

I love the way the most radical of liberals are trying to spin this as some kind of huge defeat for republicans. It reminds me of the way the radicals among us tried to spin Obama's defeat in the Texas primary against Mrs. Clinton. Clinton won the Texas primary by over 100,000 votes yet because of some weird districting advance by Sheila Jackson Brown and her ilk combined with superdelegates somehow BO received a few more delegates to the convention.

This was about as big a defeat for the republicans as my $10 losing bet on the NY Giants football team last week was to me.
Miniscule compared to the crushing defeats Obama had to feel at the hands of Virginia & Jersey voters. The folks around the country are beginning to see what BO & his Chicago cronies are all about and they simply don't like it!

I believe scozzafava's take on the inner-workings of the new republican did the trick winning over moderate voters to the Democratic side.

"Dede Scozzafava says 'hate, lies' wore her down"

“The amount of hate and lies and the deceitfulness,” she said. “I don’t believe that should be the characteristics that define the Republican Party. I think people should be allowed to have discussions and reasonable disagreements. But this was a full frontal assault on me personally and politically, for weeks.”

My fellow Conservatives, let's just say congratulations to the winner. We won some last night and we lost some last night. Win or lose, let's conduct ourselves with honor and dignity.

We won't know Obama's full impact until the mid-terms. And regardless of how the mid-terms go, someone still has to step up and beat him in 2012.

            Hat tip to Avoth: Agreed.

The democrats lost in both Virginia and New Jersey and Obama campaigned for both of the democrat losers. He went all out in New Jersey he even had his name on campaign signs. In New York he sent Vice President Biden to campaign for the democrat candidate. So by the reasoning in this article it would mean that Biden is more effective campaigning for candidates than Obama. lmao

Oh yeah, Rush, Palin, etc, also endorsed the candidates in Virgina and New Jersey. Duh!

I was very surprised at the attention the cable news channels were giving these elections last night. Almost 'Wall to Wall' coverage on two Governor races and a house seat in N.Y. This is unprecedented when you think about it. A little to much...Glad I turned it off to watch a NATURE re-run on PBS.

I don't think any of the elections were necessarily a 'referendum' on the President. There were too many local considerations.

Palin helped to attract attention to this race. Doug Hoffman went from a distant third to losing by a thin margin. I really don't think Hoffman was that exciting (He's an accountant for God's sake) but he would have been better then the Owens or Dede Scozzafava.

A stunning loss? Really?...Forget the back and forth spins to justify any position, but you can bet...(You Betcha) the Dems are very concerned VERY. The American people are asking all the right questions and the powers that be do not like them...The arrogance and self righteous continues though with their continuing to ram through this national (government) health bill...Keep in mind as we speak 'They' are massising also to ram through a Cap & Trade Bill which is so political it is outrageous in scope...We Have Had Enough!
