Introduced last February as a means of kickstarting the sluggish housing market, over 1.2 million borrowers have claimed $8.5 billion out of the original $13.6 billion allocated for the credit. Did the tax credit do what it was intended to do? Depending on which economist you speak to, an estimated 150,000 to 400,000 home sales were the direct result of the Home Buyer Tax Credit. It looks like the First Time Home Buyer Tax Credit may be sticking around a little longer than originally planned.
