Further erosion of Obama's popularity between now and next November could prove damaging to the Democratic Party. First-term presidents who had sub-50% approval ratings at the midterms -- including Harry Truman, Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton -- saw their parties suffer large congressional seat losses. In contrast, a recovery in Obama's approval rating -- particularly to above 60% -- could limit Democratic losses.

What Republicans who think there will be a repeat of '94 should bear in mind is that you'll be hard pressed to get elected based on your "family values" with the behavior of Ensign, Sanford, and Vitter still fresh in Americans' minds. It also probably won't help that the GOP continually breaks it's own records for low approval ratings.

both parties are not doing well in the minds of americans. if tuesdays elections demonstrated anything it is that americans still want change.

if ever there was a time for a third party, this is it.

I'm all about a 3rd party. Or eliminating parties all together. Candidates should all have to run on their policies, not their party. They should also be forced to explain every vote they make or miss and why.

Did anyone happen to notice that the true believers in the republican party just lost them a seat in the house.
