Evolution in the Deepest River in the World »

New species evolve when some geographic barrier—a mountain range, an ocean, a glacier—divides a population. Animals on one side of the barrier can no longer breed with animals on the other. Each group adapts to its habitat and, over time, their genes change enough to constitute separate species. This idea dates back to Darwin’s Origin of Species, published in November 1859. Stiassny and her colleagues were the first to suggest that there could be barriers within freshwater. Water, after all, is permeable for fish, right?

I'm astounded by the flow rate of the Congo River. 1.25 million cubic feet per second? I've rowed quite a few rivers. My 'home' river is the South Fork of the American River. Today it maxed out at 1400 CFS. I've run it at close to 4000 and it was pretty hairy!

A very interesting article. Equally so the comments after it. I sometimes listen to biologists debate whether a particular life form is a new species or not. Some real vitriol flows sometime. Makes me wonder how much of the discussion about evolution is stricly a product of our own very fallible definitions of species.
