This problem has been around for decades. Every now and then an article like this surfaces as a reminder. The problem is that there isn't a sufficient 'force' to keep it in the forefront of people's attention, and the only thing that will accomplish that is when a group or groups of people get LOUD, DEMANDING, & take an 'in your face' position that will force government and even citizens to "get it."

My wife's sister had surgery for cancer. The hospital released her to a skilled nursing facility. When she went in she could walk. Two weeks later the wound from the surgery was infected, she had something called c-diff that is very contagious, and she couldn't walk. Back to a hospital she went, where she died. The facility itself was ok, except for the incompetent people staffing it. Action is being taken.

The thing is, nursing homes aren't being federally regulated, and these private sectors are notorious for bad food, sloppy service by CNA's, being given the wrong medications by nurses, and so on. I've been to several such facilities unfortunately, and it's sad to say that it's a problem that's generic, and needs to be addressed to government officials.

Francis Schervier for example; in Riverdale, Bronx is one prime example of what I'm talking about.

Their CEO; James T.Higgins simply doesn't care, nor wants to spend the time talking to you or you're families complaints. He just brushes you off. I know, I used to volunteer there. I left when I saw what was going on. It's disgraceful.

This facility is being funded by both the government, and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese. So they really don't have any real excuse for their gross incompetence.

great insight everyone. My best friend mom is a nurse and she thinks the pay has to go up for the amount of work they do, but lets not get to the bad side of things, we all know CNAs do a great job.
