This problem has been around for decades. Every now and then an article like this surfaces as a reminder. The problem is that there isn't a sufficient 'force' to keep it in the forefront of people's attention, and the only thing that will accomplish that is when a group or groups of people get LOUD, DEMANDING, & take an 'in your face' position that will force government and even citizens to "get it."

My wife's sister had surgery for cancer. The hospital released her to a skilled nursing facility. When she went in she could walk. Two weeks later the wound from the surgery was infected, she had something called c-diff that is very contagious, and she couldn't walk. Back to a hospital she went, where she died. The facility itself was ok, except for the incompetent people staffing it. Action is being taken.

One of the problems is the pay for nursing assistants for the amount of hours they work. Another problem is the shortage of nurses. One nurse in each wing is in charge of 30-40 patients.
Then there's the type of nursing home. Some haven't been updated in almost 20 years because of lack of funding. Even with nursing homes, some are Cadillac.

The thing is, nursing homes aren't being federally regulated, and these private sectors are notorious for bad food, sloppy service by CNA's, being given the wrong medications by nurses, and so on. I've been to several such facilities unfortunately, and it's sad to say that it's a problem that's generic, and needs to be addressed to government officials.

Francis Schervier for example; in Riverdale, Bronx is one prime example of what I'm talking about.
Their CEO; James T.Higgins simply doesn't care, nor wants to spend the time talking to you or you're families complaints. He just brushes you off. I know, I used to volunteer there. I left when I saw what was going on. It's disgraceful.
This facility is being funded by both the government, and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese. So they really don't have any real excuse for their gross incompetence.-

One line of defense patients have is the Ombudsman. Each state runs a program of volunteers who advocate for those living in 'care' facilities. In many cases, the Ombuds-people do an outstanding job of finding problems, but it's up to the state system to follow through. And sadly, that isn't always run very well.

Anyone walking into a nursing home should find in the lobby a manuel of all citations that facility has received, and a record of follow ups by the state including whether or not the problem(s) were fixed. It's the law that those manuals are available to the public, out in plain sight.
I put in my living trust, that any child who puts me in a nursing home should I become incapacitated, is OUT of my will. After being an Ombudsman and seeing what goes on, there is no way I'm ending up in one.
