Haji is a term of honor for Islam.

But it is true that the term has been used negatively by American soldiers in Iraq. According to an Acquaintance of mine who has served a couple of tours in Iraq and is scheduled to go to Afghanistan in 2010, the term was used by he and others in his unit when speaking to Iraqis. It was used as an insult and was so received as such by the Iraqi people.
However, it was much better than some of the other words used to describe Iraqis - such as rag-heads, Sand *******, etc.
This type of treatment to a people who have been occupied, harassed, and otherwise mistreated for nothing other than being Iraqi. They don't take too kindly to this treatment since upwards of a million Iraqis by some estimates have been killed by the invading US and Allied forces, in a war started by the United States on false pretenses as an excuse to occupy a country, build permanent Military bases, steal their resources, and destroy their way of life.
The Depleted Uranium left behind from expended weaponry will continue to kill Iraqis and cause horrible birth defects for the next billion years so tomorrow won't be any better than yesterday for them.
That's why over 70% of Iraqis state that they were better off under the Dictatorship of Saddam Hussein. He would have died of old age in less than a hundred years. That's a pretty short time when compared to a billion.-

Depleted uranium has been used in the manufacture of military bullets and shells for some time. The metal is denser and has greater stopping and penetrating power than steel.

The problem is the munitions shed particulates on impact that mix with local dust and is breathed in. DU is radioactive on a low level, but also is a highly toxic heavy metal.-

My understanding is that the radioactivity level is on par with that of bricks. So that's not the danger. But as you said, it's one of the high-end heavy metals and those have been known to cause birth defects and problems the world around for centuries.
