      Evil? No, that's what moralizers on the right say when they feel cornered by progress. Hateful? Yes, frequently, but neither side has that patent on that.
      
      Opposition to universal health care is merely ignorant, fearful, and short-sighted.
      
      Those who oppose it on "the facts" have never had personal experience with how it actually works.
      
      Those who fear it would "take away their freedoms" have never been able to explain how the FAA, the federal highway system, or the USDA "takes away their freedoms". Fear needs no logic.
      
      Short-term gain trumps long-term benefit for those suckled on contemporary business theory, but America is more than a business (no, really!), it is also the human community.
      
      Health care is the one inflexible demand required by the ownership of a body, and it can't be fudged or borrowed from any other source; your Aunt Betty can give you food, shelter and clothing, but you won't get an appendectomy from her. Ergo there is no 'free market' in health care; the way we practice it today, it is a license to gouge. Pooling our resources and applying economies of scale is the only way make sure that a poor mountain-dweller's child has the same chance at a long, healthy, productive life as anyone else born here. That's the long-term view. That future child, by the way, could be your great-neice, or your grand son. Fortunes can change, unfortunately. Why tie our basic health to the value of our pocketbooks?
