Posted By Progressive 1 week, 6 days ago in Political NewsRepublicans have been working overtime for days now trying to come up with newer and bolder ways of describing the 2009 election as an unmitigated triumph — and a crystal clear sign their party will score a historic comeback in next year’s congressional races.
Not satisfied to simply proclaim the dawn of a GOP “renaissance” one day after the voting, party chairman Michael Steele the following day warned House and Senate candidates not to put themselves “in a position where you’re crossing that line on conservative principles, fiscal principles, because we’ll come after you.”

Just look at history. 1993 Clinton had a majority in both houses. First there was the largers increase in taxes to that date. Then there was Hillary care. These same two states elected Republican governors. 1994 the Democrats lost both houses. Clinton said "I got your message." He veered to the middle. The Republicans dragged him kicking and screaming to a balanced budget. I remember his speech where he begged for 6 years to get to the balanced budget. After he lost that round he acted like it was his idea.

The Gallup poll a short time back asked what people described themselves as.
Democrats 20%
Moderates 36%
Republicans 40%
Is there a consistent message there in these facts both historical and compared to the present?-

You've been corrected numerous times on those erroneous poll figures, but you keep on putting it out there. Do you not understand that not all conservatives are Republican and not all liberals are Democrats? From the same poll you think you're quoting:

36% of Americans consider themselves Democratic, 28% Republican, and 37% independent.

Incidentally, Obama's overall approval rating today stands at 52%.
