Every time a case like this comes up, it prompts a discussion regarding the rights of the offender. Where were the victim's rights? "Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time"

Maybe the kid should have the option of letting his parents serve in his place, should they agree to it. They too, have a part of the responsibility, in that they are responsible for a 13 year old. At this point, use this as a lesson to teach others, that if you commit rape, and you are under 18, you will spend the rest of your life in jail. To me, that is a great motivator to not commit any crime, let alone rape. -

The second these boys committed their crimes, they lost any rights they once had to freedom. You do the crime, you do the time. No exceptions. Maybe these harsh sentences these cases received have acted as a deterrant to many other would-be criminals over the last 30 years? We'll never know, but I wouldn't be so fast to discount the possibility.

I don't understand. I see murder cases where the guy gets off with just 10 to 20 years. Why should this kid get life for rape? I guess if he had committed murder, he might have gotten off easier.

I'm not condoning what he did. I'm just saying that murder should always have the longest sentence. No matter what.-

while i agree with you in principle that murder that should have the strongest sentences lets remember that rape, assault and victims of other violent crimes have to live with the psychological and physical scars of these assaults.

Without discussing the crime itself - let's take a look at our penal system - it is flawed from it's very concept- in it's present state it is not justice or punishment or rehabilitation, but rather purely vengence.

We take a person who cannot function in normal society & throw him inm jail with a bunch of other social psychopaths for x number of years. Isolate him from any responsiblity neccessary to normal function - no need to work - no need to make everyday descisions we all have to make and then after a given period of time, we release him to open society & expect him to function normally & rationaly - this is effect is even more evident when a young person is isolated from the processes any of us must go through growing to the age of maturity. Oufr current penal system is not the cure, but it is the incubator for a life of crime
