Twenty Years Ago, America Stood for Freedom »
Posted By RTHTGakaRoland 3 weeks, 3 days ago in Political OpinionIt didn't take long for East Germans to become disillusioned with the Communist utopia imposed upon them. The Soviets knew that would happen, thus the wall.
The wall was intended to imprison minds as well as bodies, and it achieved both purposes. The shadow of ignorance the wall cast eastward lingers two decades after its fall. Last week, an opinion poll found that 58 percent of Russians said they didn't know who built the wall. Some thought the people of Berlin built it themselves.
For nearly three decades, an entire society was kept trapped in child-like dependence by 103 miles of concrete and barbed wire and the knowledge that any failed escape attempt would earn one a bullet in the back or head.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel was raised in East Germany. Helping her country celebrate its reunification, and with it the bloodless revolution that ended the second-most oppressive, murderous regime in the history of the world, will be British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and Lech Walesa. But no Barack Obama. Maybe he's ashamed to share the stage with a Nobel Peace Prize winner who earned it.
What must the East Germans who risked their lives to protest their murderous Soviet puppet state think of this snub from the leader of the free world, the world they faced down machine-gun towers in hope of entering?
Never mind history. There's change to be made now. Such as passing a law criminalizing the choice to care for one's own health without joining an insurance collective.
As the leaders of France, Britain and Germany commemorate the end of the Cold War and the rebirth of freedom throughout the Eastern Bloc, President Obama will be too busy chipping away the freedoms his own people enjoy to attend.
For the rest of America, the anniversary will mean something. It will be a reminder of the evils that spread under the socialist banner, and that this once was a nation whose leaders believed so strongly in freedom and liberty that they determined to, and then did, save the West from socialist domination. At least temporarily.

I keep thinking I won't be surprised anymore by the height of ludicrous junk the "right" keeps coming up with in their attempts to whine about Obama or to try to discredit him.
Reply
But this one - so far - gets the prize.
How creative can people get when they take the 20 year anniversary of the tearing down of the Berlin Wall and turn it into a rant about how bad Obama is?
And you all continue to sink even lower on the credibility scale. Keep up the good work .... -

Bush did more to violate the freedoms of Americans than the previous 10presidents. Bush sold us out the bankers and the elites that further enslave middle class Americans.
Reply
But it's okay...the Wall Street boys continue to their legalized theft and swindling of Americans future.
AmericanS need to revolt against the elites who pull the strings in the shadows.

The River in Reverse
Reply
Elvis Costello
2006
How long does a promise last?
How long can a lie be told?
What would I take in exchange for my soul?
Would I notice when it was sold?
Wake me up
Wake me up
Wake me up with a slap or a kiss
There must be something better than this
'Cos I don't see how it can get much worse
What do we have to do to send
The river in reverse
Every man a crawling kingsnake
Every girl a half a heartbreak
Every woman sold into shame
To any son without a name
Are your arms too weak to lift?
Another shovel on the graveyard shift
Here comes the flood if you catch my drift
Where the things that they promised are not a gift
If man falls through the mirror of a lake
They fish him out quick and they call him a fake
Give him all the temptations he can take
Tie him up high 'til his bones break
Wake me up
Wake me up
Wake me up with a slap or a kiss
There must be something better than this
'Cos I don't see how it can get much worse
What do we have to do to send
The river in reverse
I thought I heard somebody laugh
Look out your window
They're chasing shadows in the dark
They're counting widows
I felt a sliver of glass
Saw a cross in splinters
I felt the truce of spring
Dig me out of the trench of winter
So count your blessings when they ask permission
To govern with money and superstition
They tell you it's all for your own protection
'Til you fear your own reflection
But the times are passing from illumination
Like bodies falling from a constellation
An uncivil war divides the nation
So erase the tape on that final ape running down creation
Running down creation
Wake me up
Wake me up
Wake me up with a slap or a kiss
There must be something better than this
Wake me up
Wake me up with a slap or a kiss
There must be something better than this-

Communists and Socialists have noted how important a certain type of person was to the implementation of their oppressive regimes. They named them "Useful ____" somethings, but the second word escapes me at the moment.
Reply
I do think, however, from my recollection of their description that that large faction of the American Left that bases their political concepts on late night comedians and pop songs are "Useful ____".

The tearing down of the Berlin Wall was a triumph of freedom over totalitarian government. As head of the country that people around the world consider the epitome of freedom, the president should have been there.
Reply
The fact that he didn't go says to the world that Obama does not think freedom is important.-

Bullsh-t ....

And if he WAS there, you all would have complained that he shouldn't be running around the rest of the world when America is in a depression and an economic crisis.
You will criticize Obama NO MATTER WHAT he does. Period.

What do you suppose is more important to the interests of the United States? Going to celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall twenty years ago or going to Asia to try and keep our relationship strong with the people that own our debt?
Reply
I'd say Asia. And the President agrees.
If he went to Berlin and gave a fantastic speech about hope and change and redemption the Conservatives and Republicans would accuse him of grandstanding and being a "celebrity". If he doesn't go, it's because he doesn't understand what's at stake.
You see, the President is looking towards the future with an eye on the past. Unlike most of you he isn't living in it.-

If he can fly to Europe to get the Olympic games for Detroit, he can damn well fly to Germany to honor an event that is similar to our Independence Day. Obama can fly east or west to get to Asia, the travel time is about the same. Flying eastward with a pit stop in Germany would be the smallest inconvenience. No, this is an intentional snub and insult to Germany and his statement on what he thinks of freedom.
Reply
Since when did Obama care what the Conservatives and Republicans think?
As for the future, Hillary will have some great photo ops and talking points if she should challenge the then failed Obama in 2012.
