Does U.S. support for the Afghan president really make sense? »
Posted By berkeley 1 month, 2 weeks ago in Political OpinionFifty-nine Americans died in October fighting to protect the corrupt Afghan electoral process that resulted in a second five-year term for Hamid Karzai. Nonetheless all the necessary evidence is available. All that the policy-makers and military leaders need to do is to have a nice friendly chat with their somewhat older Russian counterparts and they'll learn that no war in Afghanistan will EVER be won by an outside power and that all the treasure, manpower, equipment in the world is not going to bring a stable peace of a kind that Western democracy will find desirable or acceptable. Even labelling Al Quaeda/Taliban as the enemy to be defeated is nothing more than a distraction. If it wasn't them it would be - and probably WILL be some other warlords depending how far off into the distant horizon you may wish to speculate. -
