SOTD: Is Mom More Merciful Than God? »
Posted By Bkumm 1 week, 4 days ago in ReligionChristians would have us believe that God is all merciful and all loving. This confuses me. I'm pretty sure that Mom is more merciful than God.

I've submitted this basic article before, but this one has significant revisions.

Based on a conversation we all had yesterday about atheism and whether or not "God" believes in us, I thought it necessary to add one of the reasons that I think that the whole Christian God thing is a little (or a lot) dicey. -

"For instance, if I were to tell my mom that I was gay (I’m not, but let’s just say I did), she’d be disappointed, but she wouldn’t send me to burn in Hellfire for all eternity for it. Not God. He doesn’t have any truck with that kind of behavior and rather than send me to my room without supper, it’s straight to the pits of Hell for me. ">>>>>

This nonsense is why I have no use for organized religion. Mere mortals dictating their wacky ideas as 'god's' ideas. Whatever the higher power is, and I believe there is one, it gave me the brains to figure things out for myself. Never will some goofball dictate what I will or won't believe.
And as the mom of a good man who is 'gay', I don't take lightly the BS that is spewed about him in the name of 'gods.' People who descend to the level of bigotry displayed and demanded by major religions have literally lost the gift they were given by a power far superior to the man made nonsense organized religion has exhibited.-

I know it was tongue in cheek, but this isn't what the Bible says, anyhow. It's what dogmatic interpretation of the Bible by mankind has led to with a bit of mistranslation thrown in. -

He gave you the brain to figure things out that's called commonsense and there is a guidance to follow because you are living among his other creatures and your actions can create problem for others as well. So God gave you a brain, intelligence and logic then he just let you figure things out then what is the point that made him create you? What do you give it to him in return for the life that you enjoy here before you die?

Mom's are loving, they forgive -most of them anyway- but look at all the mom's out there who kill their children. Who sell them into slavery. Who abort their children. Who abandon their children for someone else.
If you had a good loving mom. Thank God.
As far as comparing God to humans. Can't be done.
We don't have the capacity to understand why God does as He does.
Can a thimble hold an entire ocean ??? Can a grain of sand compare it's stature to an entire desert ???
I think I understand what you are trying to get at. You want to know why God can't be a little more relaxed on His Rules.
Well, since He is perfect, and we are not. I think He knows and we will find out.
Peace.-

I personally believe that if there is a god it is highly unlikely that He/She/It has rules that wouldn't make sense to a three year old. I don't think that all of the "rules" as they are written are the Voice of God, I think they are there to control behavior in a society that didn't have the advantages that we have. And I'm glad they did it at the time. But, it's time to put away childish things and think about god in a way that makes sense.
However, as I've voiced again and again, it doesn't matter to me what someone else believes and I would fight to defend their right to do so. But, it does matter to me that they respect my right to believe as I will.
And yes, there are some mothers out there who are unfit to have the name. That's a shame, but it doesn't invalidate my point.
And peace be with you as well.

As usual, Wolfie and some others have taken the time and effort to carefully read and understand what is being said before dropping the article and refusing to comment.

The God taught by those in organized religion doesn’t even come close to what I see God being. First off, the reference to hell being a place of fire and suffering is a misinterpretation of the Hebrew words Hades and Sheol (sp), which means a hole in the ground or ‘grave’.
Reply
The same bible they tout they are interpreting says in the first book, (the wages of sin is death), not everlasting burning in hell fire.
But the thought of saving one from a burning place gives people that claim only they know the way to keep others from becoming a toasted marshmallow much power. And by the way it’ll cost you to be saved, at a rate of 10% of everything you have. After all, God needs our money for some reason.
God to me is much cooler, understanding our weakness and willing to forgive just about any fallible thing we humans can’t help but do. After all, we are mere humans, and acting like humans comes too naturally for an omnipotent being to hold it against us.
I hope to have a few beers with the Big Guy someday and discuss a few things. My first question would be, why is Houston never seems to have decent sport teams? Yeah I know, not a big deal, but dang, how about a decent team once in a while Big Guy? I’m sure he would just chuckle, take a swig of his beer, put his arm around my shoulders and give me a noggin rub with his knuckles.-

Reply
Mind clarifying what you mean by "just about any fallible thing?" Are you suggesting that there are some things He's not willing to forgive, or am I misunderstanding your view? -

Not to nitpick, but since we are kinda, Hades is not a Hebrew word.
Reply
What I think you were trying to say is that Hades (Greek, meaning "the unseen") was substituted for Sheol (Hebrew meaning (probably) "burrow underground"). That is true.
I'm with you with having a few beers with the Big Guy (or Gal, but the situation is going to be WAAYYY different if It's a She, viva la difference!!!) if He exists. I doubt that He does. But, I am willing to say that He does NOT exist the way many Christians, Jews and Muslims perceive Him. -

Funny, but a lot of people profess to believe in god, while having a somewhat take on god than the scriptures portray.
Reply
And that's OK. It suggests to me that many who look for the divine in the scriptures are perhaps already more in tune than the scriptures themselves. Still, they may find, because they are looking. As long as they don't take the Bible too seriously.
The scriptures represent God through the cultural filter of a primitive group of desert nomads. These days, it is perhaps more interesting as a tribal history of the Jews, hittites, etc than a luminous revelation of divinity.
And so often the folks who do insist on believing in god exactly to the letter as instructed by scripture are made the worse rather than better for it - grim, humorless, intolerant and judgemental. Why would anyone take that ride? Unless they have actually found what THEY are seeking in the scriptures - justification for self-righteousness. -

Since it was brought up before, here's an interesting site, particular on this page devoted to understanding John 14:6 (as to inclusionary or exclusionary):

In Islam God is 70 times merciful than mom and the number 70 times seems infinite and his mercy over takes his anger, perhaps that is the reason criminals are continue to be criminals but the respite will end herein this world because their appointed time to mend their ways.

Allah is as cruel as Jehovah and as merciful. They should equal each other as they are the same god and come from the same place.
Reply
Those who reject or persecute the believer shall taste the Fire. Those who are in the Garden will hear the cries of those in the Fire and heed them not.
Allah, like Jehovah, is merciful and beneficent to those who obey His mighty will. To those who do not, Allah will show no mercy.
Again, we're in the same conundrum that we are with the Christians.
